When you decide to watch it you can watch Cowboy Bebop on animefreak.tv (it’s free!).

When I watch anime I rotate between intense (Mirai Nikki, holy cheez-it’s it was dark) and light and fun (Ouran, or Fooly Cooly.) It’s helps keep my mind even (if that makes any sense at all) 😛
I watch whatever strikes me as the opposite of the last thing I watched. So if I just watched a slice of life, it’s time for action. If I just watched something heavy and philosophical, it’s time for something lighthearted and fun. If I just watched some comedic brain-candy, it’s time for something serious, maybe even dark.

Since I just watched Madoka Magica (which was a tragic masterpiece), I’m watching Hyouka, which is quieter and happier and has some really well-developed characters. Actually, I was going to watch Gintama (because I’ve seen some of it and for some reason I think it’s hilarious). But then my cousin was watching Hyouka, and since it was enough of a contrast I decided to just go with it. 🤷 I’ll probably go for some kind of action next, since Hyouka is sweet but pretty slow going.

Sadly animefreak is not a legal source, so I’ll probably be waiting around for quite a while. 😦

Madoka Magica surprised me so much. At first I thought it was going to be some frilly magical girl anime with poofy dresses and cutsy stuff like that, but when the first labrynth appeared I was like ‘yes! this is way different that I thought it would be!’.

Do you know of any legal anime viewing website? I can’t afford to by any anime dvd’s and the library has squat, so if I want to watch any at all I have to watch online.

I know, it was awesome! I was told that it was some kind of grim, dark, really depressing show, and the strength of the characters in it really surprised me. I think it managed to be uplifting in a way, despite all the deaths and the fact that Madoka is mostly forgotten.

I have no money to speak of, either. Other than the library, I’m limited to Crunchyroll, Hulu (which can’t be used on mobile devices) and Funimation’s website and youtube channel. All are free, although they have commercials like regular TV.

My cousin has Hyouka downloaded onto his computer, and I have no idea if he paid for it. 🤷 Otherwise, I wouldn’t know where to watch that, either.

Sadly there are some real gems that cannot be watched on any of those sites, and Cowboy Bebop is one of those. 😦

There’s a new anime called “kids on the slope” that is catholic. Its about the high school life of a people in a small southern town (which seems to be mostly catholic). It has a priestly vocation in it, the rosary, and some catholic values, 3 of the main characters are practising Catholics who befriend and positively influence a new guy in town by inviting him to join their jazz band. Some scenes are overly dramatic, but its still a pretty good starter for a long needed new genre of Japanese cartoons.

Kids on the slope is really about catholic high school kids having fun in a band and helping out a new kid in town who has never had true friends as he is affected by divorce and a father who works far away. A few times, a priest in a flashback is seen talking to one of the main characters about the rosary telling him “when the world rejects you, you can always count on God. This rosary isn’t a necklace, it’s for praying with, don’t forget that.”

I think its the first of many Catholic animes.

Ack, I heard this was really good! It’s on my to-watch list, but I probably won’t be watching another slice of life/character piece for some time, now that I’m watching Hyouka.

Still, it’s really awesome that there is an anime that gets Catholicism right! 🙂 The only other one I know of that has intentional Christian/Catholic themes in it is Trigun, which is an SF anime that ultimately focuses on forgiveness.

Hi everyone! I’m a relatively new member to the forums but have loved anime for a long time! I also love to draw fan art, love seiyuu, and have been learning Japanese for several years. I like to pay attention to content ratings on ANN or MAL, but alas I’ve been tricked many times and have seen anime with content not to my liking. (´-ω-`; ) But I’ve been enjoying skimming through what you guys are watching and am seeing some great recommendations!

This season’s anime I’m currently I’m watching: Shingeki no Kyojin (I love this show so much), Kakumeiki Valvrave, Uta no Prince-sama 2, and Red Data Girl. (Forgot to mention I’m also currently obsessed with Kuroko no Basuke and Kamisama Hajimemashita.)

I typically like shounen, some shoujo, comedy, fantasy, and slice-of-life anime, so any recommendations you can send my way I’d greatly appreciate! Since it’s summer, I’d like to start a couple series I’ve never seen before, but I’m currently in a bind as to what to watch next. Here’s MyAnimeList!

It’s been a while since I’ve been an active member of a forum, so hopefully I can keep up and contribute in some way too. ^^ Yoroshiku~
こんにちは、レイチェルさん! ようこそ!

Some animes that I didn’t quite see on your list that u may want to check out are:
Angel Beats, Bamboo Blade, Xam’d (all are rated pretty good and are at least 1 of the genres that you like 🙂 ).

If you ever want to know if a show is being streamed legally (in the U.S. or any country for that matter), just go to the ANN’s main description page of any anime, like Hikaru no Go, for instance: Hikaru No Go Main Description Page on ANN And on the description page, if you scroll down, you’ll see all the English companies involved in licensing/streaming it, and in Hikaru No Go’s case, you’ll see 3 companies that are or have been involved (in the past) in streaming it. If you check the description page for Hyouka, it’s not available for legal streaming in the U.S. (and the R1 BD/DVDs don’t seem to be available yet), so to have legal eps of them, one would have to have imported the BD/DVDs (if they live in the U.S.).

As for Cowboy Bebop, you can actually watch it on Adult Swim’s (Toonami’s) website. Here’s there schedule if interested: video.adultswim.com/schedule/ It seems like Cowboy Bebop airs @ 4:30am either every Saturday or Sunday… I can’t really tell but I think it’s literally Saturday since if you look at the “On-Air Schedule”, it seems like it’s on the Saturday B-Block listing… I think.🤷
Do you know of any legal anime viewing website?
Some other ones:

–The Anime Network
–Anime News Network
–Viz
–Netflix
–Crackle
–Viki.com
–Anime on Demand (for UK/Ireland users): anime-on-demand.com/
–Animesols.com
–Adult Swim: video.adultswim.com/watch-episodes/

Wow… I’ve searched before in the past, and never really found any “Catholic” animes, so this is really awesome to see! Also, I checked the ratings for it on MAL, and wow again!!

Score: 8.51 (scored by 25107 users)
Ranked: #80

I must say that I’m very impressed! 😃

Ah, good to know that it’s airing somewhere at least. That’s an inconvenient hour, but maybe I can manage it since it’s summer. And I didn’t know that about the ANN pages, so thanks! 😃

As for Hyouka… To be honest, I suspected it was an illegal sub. Do you think it’s OK to watch it? Nobody will be making a profit whether I watch it or not, and it’s already been downloaded… 😦 I really do want to support the companies that distribute anime, but if there is no way for me to do that, it’s sad to miss out on good ones like this. Maybe I’m just making excuses, though?

Oh 4:30am isn’t that bad, lol! 😛 Also, do keep in mind though that the next ep of Cowboy Bebop that will air this Saturday does not appear to be ep 1 (and it may be a while before it gets back to ep 1). The “On Air Schedule” says 108, and I would guess that it just means ep 8, but I honestly don’t know for sure since I’ve never really streamed any of their live eps.

Well, if you ask 100 Catholics this question, I think you would get different answers, some for it, and some against it. Personally, I generally try to obey all civil laws as long as there’s nothing against our faith involved. In this particular case, an illegal sub is still an illegal sub… :o

Also, don’t worry about missing good animes, there’s so much out there that are legally available that you’ll never run out of things to watch (unless u spend all day and night watching anime, in which case, u might, lol).

I heard that most episodes of Cowboy Bebop are pretty standalone, so it should be fine.

I don’t really care about missing out on an anime unless it’s a really important one (like Cowboy Bebop). However, having to stop in the middle of an anime I am already partway through really bothers me. I never did get to finish a show called Planetes, because I decided to only watch legal stuff while I was in the middle of the series. I will be sad if I cannot finish it ever, and I will be sad if I cannot finish Hyouka. (But not quite as sad- Planetes was something special!)

Generally I do read some manga illegally if it has not been legally translated at all, since there is no conceivable way for me to get the story otherwise. I try to avoid it with anime, though.

Ah, well… Maybe somebody will find an old DVD set of Planetes and give it to me in 10 years or so. Or, you never know, I might have money by then. :o

Stein’s gate was really good. Very suspenseful and mindful of potential plot holes. It’s about parralel universes and a man that sends his memories to many of his doubles.

U know, I’m tempted to get up @ 4:30am & re-watch Cowboy Bebop myself since it was so long ago that I saw it that I can’t remember anything about the storyline, lol. I just know that it was real good, and that the name of the main male protagonist’s ship is called the Swordfish II. But the funny thing is, the only reason why I can remember the name of the ship is because I’m currently playing a particular visual novel game that has a mini-game in it that quizzes me on various anime-related things, like the name of that particular space ship in Cowboy Bebop, lol.

As for Planetes, someone recommended that to me not too long ago, and I can tell just from the synopsis, that I would probably really like this a lot. It’s a mere 50-some bucks for the R1 set on Ebay right now, lol. However, I actually still have way too many things on my queue list to watch that I’m not quite worried about getting this series though. xD

Oh, there’s a conceivable way for you to legally get the storyline! … Learn Japanese (then import them)! 😛 😛 😛

Oh yeah, I saw that. I agree that it was good, but I was expecting something way better from the reviews. And it’s weird, too, because it’s exactly the sort of thing I normally like- lots of time travel and character development. But for some reason, I just thought it was good as opposed to amazing.

I want to know what happens! I was almost done, too!

It’s OK, though. I’m sure there will come a time in my life when I have 50 dollars to use up on this spectacular anime. It’s one of the few animes where I think that is actually a perfectly fair price. 🙂

Inconceivable!! 😛

I know, I know. I’m working on it, but I don’t see myself getting good enough to really read them anytime soon. Maybe this will be part of my ten-year plan, too.

OK, official ten-year plan regarding anime: have enough money to occasionally spend $50 on really awesome licensed anime, and know Japanese well enough to read the end of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou once I import it. 😃

… Now how do I say that title in hiragana? Great, I’m already rusty. :ouch:

Soooo… Since I can’t watch Hyouka, I guess I’ll go back to Kotoura-San? I just feel like finishing a weird slice of life show.

But I still really want to watch Hyouka. Ah, well. Sacrifices must be made. 😛

This may not exactly be anime, but does anyone here besides me like Touhou Project? I just bought my first game, Mountain of Faith, a month ago, and I really enjoy it!

The last anime I finished was about 2 years ago and it was Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It was awesome. Sadly a lot of people [my peers] judge it based on it’s cutesy art style and immediately think it’s just another one of those super-cute carefree anime like Shugo Chara.
I’ll admit, when you look at them you just see a bunch of girls in cute dresses and ribbons, but honestly it’s a pretty deep and dark sorta anime with a kind of philosophical level to it.

I don’t watch anime anymore, simply because it’s just not my cup of tea anymore (unless it’s studio ghibli, which I’ll always have a soft spot for).

I did watch most of the anime I’ve watched illegally (even Madoka Magica… I don’t think i watched that on crunchyroll.) But that was years ago, can’t do anything about it now. Besides at the time I didn’t know it was illegal.

Also, the illegal manga reading thing… I also did that before (mostly just for Pokemon manga lol). I know it’s hard to resist the temptation of reading manga illegally… I think fans can request a translating company (like Viz?) to distribute translated versions of a certain manga they want. It takes time, but hey if you’re enough of a fan you’d be willing to wait for it. Manga’s a bit pricey though, so ask your local library to buy it for you. xD I think some distributors of manga offer E-book versions, which are probably cheaper.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! 🙂
Which shonen series are your favorites? Mine are Soul Eater and Fullmetal Alchemist (both versions), but I like Inuyasha and Naruto, too. Haven’t managed to finish them yet, but it’s their fault for being so long! 😛
My favorite shounen have been Bleach (a lot of my friends got tired of it a long while back but somehow I’m still keeping up with it lol) and Kuroko no Basuke. I just recently finished FMA Brotherhood actually, and it was so good!! It’d be nice to own it on DVD someday. You mentioned Ouran too, which I’ve heard good stuff about; hopefully I can get to it before the summer’s over!

Also, Kids on a Slope was wonderful! When I watched it I wasn’t expecting any Catholic themes to pop up, so I was pleasantly surprised. I wish there were more anime like that. And unrelated, Hyouka is another one of my favorites! But yes, unfortunately there’s no legal way to watch it. I wish Crunchyroll would gain the rights to KyoAni’s recent works. /sigh

あ、ありがとう!おじゃましまーす! Thanks for the recommendations! I was sad that I wouldn’t know what to watch next after finishing up my next anime, but now I’ve got plenty of good ideas! ^^ Also, has anyone seen or have any opinions on Kokoro Connect and Moribito? I’m currently wondering if I should add them to my To Watch list. 🙂 Thanks again!

I am really enjoying Hataraku Maousama (The Devil is a Part-Timer). I wish more shows could be this good at comedy, action, drama, animation, characters, and dialogue as this. It’s also another example of Japan appropriating terms from Christianity for their own use.

I’m thinking about rewatching Otome Youkai Zakuro this summer. Anyone else seen it?

Oh yeah, I also wanna mention I’m re-watching Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix.

I know it’s not technically an anime, but hey it’s close enough.
