“When Marnie Was There” - wow! Call me impressed. This film was really good.

Trailer: youtube.com/watch?v=xu8U60uw2Go

Important to point out that this film is NOT a lesbian or yuri romance or anything related to that at all. It’s something very innocent and most dear. Do try to see it. I cannot say more because it will spoil the story.
This is the only Studio Ghibli film since Grave of the Fireflies which had me crying.

The only legitimate way at present is to purchase the Japanese DVD/Bluray. The Bluray is region free and has English subtitles, the DVD is Region 2 but can be played back on many PCs with the right software. Places like Amazon.jp and cdjapan stock it.
Thanks!

That one looks good.

God bless you!

I don’t like to cry. Plot summary without spoilers, please?

PS: Having finished Princess Nine, my latest is Deltora Quest, which is really really tough to find subtitled.
Introverted twelve year old Sapporo girl, called Anna (note that this is in Japan and that’s her name) is sent to a countryside village by her caring foster parents because of concerns for her health, she suffers from asthma, as well as social isolation. There she stays with her aunt and rather eccentric uncle. Anna has issues with social isolation and finds herself not being able to fit in ever since she found out she’s adopted, she also believes her foster parents are only taking care of her for the subsidy payments they receive. The same problems recur with her interactions with girls her age in the village.

In the countryside, she comes across a nearby mansion across the marsh which seems very familiar to her and where she sees in the window, a blonde girl of similar age, called Marnie. Strangely, her first sighting of Marnie is in a dream. Marnie befriends Anna. Marnie seems to live a rather glamorous lifestyle - having wonderful and extravagant party throwing parents, her own nanny and maids, beautiful clothes and so on. Anna becomes a little envious of Marnie but the two hit it off and seem to connect on a very close level. Marnie seems to be interested in everything concerning Anna. However, one day something happens and Anna believes that Marnie has also abandoned her, like everyone else…

Thanks. I actually looked this up and I really want to see a subtitled version!

Well it’s based on a book based in East Anglia. Really charming story with a non-modern story line - you won’t see Westerners make such films or at least Hollywood.

If you’re willing to import your Studio Ghibli films, as I always do, CD Japan has the film on Bluray and DVD as said, it is English subtitled. The Japanese language dub is excellent too, English/American dubs always suck by comparison (with the exception of old dubs for Laputa or Kiki’s Delivery Service from the 80s/90s) - too Hollywoody. (Also on Ebay or Amazon Japan). They all ship worldwide.

Don’t feed Hollywood, buy the Japanese original version :).

I wonder if I could indeed get it at a reasonable price. I read that Disney doesn’t have the rights to this one and another group will be dubbing it, so if it’s Coming Here Soon, it MAY have a subtitled version I could afford.

Forego some other luxuries and get this version, you know you want to. 🙂

I may have to wait, as I’m not comfortable ordering from CD Japan, but I appreciate that you put up the link. Thanks!
Not comfortable? I’ve been buying from them from 2000. 🙂 I’ve purchased almost every Studio Ghibli film from them, usually about 2 years before US release and infinity before release in my country (no local releases here). 🙂 Amazon.co.jp is an alternative too. Anyway no worries. Just saying this is really a very good film.

I am watching the second season of Sword Art Online. It is fun, I really liked the first arc, in the GGO game. Characters were are compelling and they are dealing with some pretty difficult stuff, without it becoming weird crazy anime stuff and without it becoming so heavy that it is a turn off. Just started the Sleeping Knights/Mother’s Rosario arc, the new characters are not as compelling, but I like the Asuna character building.

Oh did anyone watch the second season of Kamisama Kiss? So much fun, it sounds like there will be another season. I hope so, it is such a sweet anime.

Still slowwwlyyy watching Ranma 1/2. And looking for a Hamtaro sub.

Well.

What do you get when you mix boxing with nuns and slapstick? Takahashi Rumiko’s One Pound Gospel.

I had a few of the single comic-size issues of the manga and was always curious about the anime. Finally got to see the OVA.

If you can get past the Felony Misuse of Catholicism (I am fairly sure a novitiate nun cannot hear Confessions, even in Japan), you find not only Takahashi’s trademark Idiot Hero (in this case, a gluttonous featherweight boxer), but a wide assortment of characters, each with a different and more outlandish character flaw.

I knew there was a reason Inu Yasha was my favorite Takahashi opus. Because Inu Yasha is actually a HEROIC hero.

And yet…all the annoying foibles of One Pound Gospel’s cast make you look at your own weaknesses and wonder about the human condition.

The OVA only covered a small portion of the manga. Which, I hear, at last has a real ending. I’ll probably have to buy it.

.
LOL, I am going to have to use that.

I recently watch the movie Fall from Paradise (on Netflix), on accident. I thought it was a show. I really enjoyed it. It had a lot of the sci-fi post-apocolyptic anime cliches and was relatively predictable, but the cinematography was good and the characters fun.

Is that a recent movie with cgi animation?

How was the quality of the animation? and content warnings if any?

Thanks.

God bless you.

I believe it is CGI, I thought the animation was nice, when paused my husband thought I was watching Harry Potter movie. 😛 It was pretty clean, the only content warring I can think of was the main character is wearing a skimpy bathing suit in the beginning and gets a cloned body shortly thereafter, I don’t believe you see anything).

I finally saw When Marnie Was There! Completely wonderful, highly recommended.

Thanks for pointing it out here, Tenofovir.

Yeah some people called it a lesbian film, but of course the film is anything but this. One has to watch to the end though.

Which I did! Huge payoff. Nope, not gonna post spoilers.

But the little girl with glasses was sooo cute. I’m thinking her design was a nod to Space Pirate Mito.

Charlotte is very good. So far two episodes, and there is no sign of a Charlotte but the show sounds intriguing. Also they are very tactful and avoid panty shots, when the girl kicks the guy (and she does that a lot!) her skirt covers everything up. Key/VisualArts seems to be going well here, so far. Oh and there is an imouto in this show which reminds me of Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

The Japanese SDF propaganda anime called GATE has also launched. First 2 eps were quite meh with the JSDF massacring the equivalent of Roman legions. Episode one had a soldier tell our main hero protagonist that he does not do any “disgusting” things with guys and only likes girls. I wonder if SJWs will attack this anime for suggesting gay sex is “disgusting”. The show also shows the Americans as being less than gracious. So far two eps and no signs of the cute alien world girls the show promised, but they’ll be there, including an elf girl, a Nagato Yuki like girl and a gothic lolita toughie and they will be joining the protagonist’s side as shown by the credits material.

We’ve been re-watching AA! Megami-sama! (aka Oh! My Goddess!)…

Patient, much put-upon Morisato Keiichi accidentally dials the Goddess Help Line, and ends up with Belldandy, a Goddess First Class, by his side.

The series mixes Norse mythology, Japanese culture and computers with great style. The characters are sharp, well-designed, and funny, with some depth.

The first season is cute and different, and very watchable.

The second season degenerates into nothing but formerly interesting characters doing stupid things, and wall-to-wall fanservice. We stopped after the first ep.
