If God would have wanted to, would it be possible for him to simply annihilate the souls that would be going to hell after death? Would it have been possible for God to create the world where those who accept and follow him are given eternal life, and those who don’t are annihilated after death?

Interesting question. What good does an existence in hell accomplish? I would imagine with the sufferings described in hell, its inhabitants would rather not exist. Plus what good can come from eternal suffering if the dead in hell can’t make amends and change their ways?

Also how does your question relate to Mathew 26:24
“The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.”
I assume this passage references Judas? Does Judas’ existence not fit in that question?

So I’m curious if it would be better for those souls in Hell to never have been born?

It is inherently bad that those souls chose to reject God. But still, their existence is inherently good, even though they have chosen to spend their existence in eternal torments.
You don’t think that people sin out of weakness, not because they are rejecting God, but because they are weak ? You are a woman, but for some men it is difficult not to commit the mortal sin of adultery. Today many women at the beach and in other places dress very sexily and upon seeing the woman a man may have lust. But it is written that “anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” So at the beach, or even in some musical programs where women wiggle around and dance sexily, a man can easily commit the mortal sin of adultery by looking at her with lust. He does not generally do so to reject God and to choose Hell. He is just responding to the natural biological urges out of a weakness for lust, not because he is choosing Hell. He is not rejecting God.

The doctrine of annihilation is a heresy. There are some non-Catholic groups that teach this error, but it is not a Christian notion, let alone Catholic.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2nd Edition, states:

1035 The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, “eternal fire.” The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.

1038 The resurrection of all the dead, “of both the just and the unjust,” (Acts 24:15) will precede the Last Judgment. This will be “the hour when all who are in the tombs will hear [the Son of man’s] voice and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.” (Jn 5:28-29) Then Christ will come “in his glory, and all the angels with him. . . . Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. . . . And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Mt 25:31,32,46)

The question of extreme pain and suffering due to evil being allowed
by Angelic & Humankind’s freewill certainly is not easy to answer.
But those, through their own fault, choose to be selfish manipulative
seducers - actual or complicit liars, murderers, & destroyers,
choose to be Eternal Death Beings. There obviously are not any
children there. Someone has to be of confirmation age grown
into adulthood to be fully able to make the final choice in thoughts
words and actions. I don’t think the literal age of 21 applies to a severely
(spiritually, emotionally and/or physically) abused child. Only God
knows final impenitence of any individual, but obviously someone
needs to have a mature adult mind to choose loss of Salvation.
But we are allowed to strongly
suspect Adolf Hitler, for example, is weeping & gnashing at teeth
in his own torment. But those who suffered unearned suffering,
including lack of knowledge spiritually, emotionally, & physically
oppressed complacent persons in Germany who were of good will;
and Jesus Christ forgave them, by His Merits can be made blameless.
~
In the end, all washed sins were sins of lack of full knowledge
AS GOD SEES THE HEART of a person. This, of course, is nothing
to be presumed upon, or despair of one’s inner self and circumstance
as an excuse that, well, I can’t help myself. Not to worry,
The Good Shepherd lights, guards, rules, and guides sincere hearts;
striving to surrender to His Mighty Will.

(the following is supposition)
Personally, I think God forces Damnation to be Holy.
They are not allowed children, obviously, so their minds are forced
into eternal celibacy. Since Paul The Apostle said they could look
in a mirror, look away and immediately forget what they look like;
they can’t remember anyone on earth. Most of the time they
are not aware of Jesus The Christ. — but they know each of them,
in some fashioned are guilty of His Blood.
~
And they can never be pleasing to God;
but have to get their minds in the proper framework to appease
their own suffering. Since they are all masochists & sadists,
each of their countenances incurs increasing at the perfect rate,
so they cannot revel at each of their own pain or someone else’s
pain who live there. They spend much time in almost abject
lethargy. And in order to accomplish a positive thought, they must
refrain from what they want to do, namely blame and curse God
for their own decision. I suppose, since God can never truly be mocked
or harmed — with Almighty Perfect Assertiveness - He Allows
some guttural blaming which none of them enjoy whatsoever;
but I would not like to know one iota of the punishment to keep them
in line that they incur. They chose their fate, to be Eternally evil.
I don’t think it is a coincidence that ‘live’ spelled backward is ‘evil.’
But Jesus Christ’s Righteous inherit Eternal Life with God and
one another.

Hallelujah!

existence in hell
“Existence in hell” is a choice which was made by that particular soul, by the choices that soul made during life on Earth. There are only two choices: “30He that is not with me, is against me…” Mt 12:30 DR.
Also, God’s Perfect Justice is fulfilled in this.
