On July 7, 2007 Pope Benedict XVI issued the ground-breaking Motu Proprio on the use of the Roman Liturgy prior to the reform of 1970.

It was a glorious day in the history of our Church and a banner day for those of us who treasure the Tridentine Mass.

Sadly, there are very many among the clergy and laity who still wish to suppress the Extraordinary Form, and there is still much work to be done to help it regain acceptance. I have tried to get a monthly Tridentine Mass at my parish, but have met some pretty stiff resistance despite a parochial vicar ON STAFF WHO LIVES IN THE RECTORY who is qualified and willing to celebrate the Extraordinary Form.

I will be praying a rosary today for the acceptance and growth of the Tridentine Mass / Mass of John XXIII / Latin Mass / Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. Anyone who wishes to join me please feel free to do so.

+Pax Christi+

Below are links to the Motu Proprio and Benedict XVI’s letter to his Bishops.

I fully acknowledge the validity of the Novus Ordo / Mass of Paul VI / New Mass / Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite. I just prefer the Traditional Latin Mass.

Hang in there, RF. Are you very far from the New Hampshire FSSP parish that is just getting going?

I’m actually on the NH border, but still about 45 mins away from the FSSP parish. They’re in Nashua, and I’m next to Plaistow, NH. 😦 I do plan to get over there one of these Sundays. My wife is a cantor at our parish, so if we go elsewhere for Mass, we need to plan ahead.

Sometimes they have a Latin Mass in Lawrence, MA (two towns over) that I’ve been to; and I’ve driven down to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston for the Latin Mass (every Sunday at 10am). I make the trip to Boston occasionally because the priest who celebrates the Latin Mass there is a friend of mine and it’s nice to see him celebrate the ancient rite.

Well it’s not an insurmountable distance. I drive 35 minutes (40 km) to attend Mass at a Benedictine abbey. It’s an Ordinary Form Mass, but with Gregorian chant and very beautifully celebrated.

It can be a challenge to get there in a winter storm, and sometimes it’s best to stay local when the weather gets really nasty, but I make it there almost every Sunday when not ill or traveling elsewhere.

Where do you go to a Latin mass in Lawrence? Not Sacred Heart I hope…

Yes. For a while they were having one once a month. I know it’s not the greatest neighborhood, but I do like the church. Very beautiful.

Are you from the area?

My grandmother lived in Lawrence until last month when health forced her to move to Methuen. And Sacred Heart used to be her parish until they shut it down. Attended several masses there over the years with her before I Ieft the Catholic Church. My mom even went to their school back in the day, so I’m quite familiar with it.

This is going to sound odd coming from someone who himself left the Catholic Church, but Sacred Heart is not a true Catholic Church any longer. It’s currently under the administration of a sedevacantist group, the Willing Shepherds. The archdiocese shut Sacred Heart down about 11 years ago and the sedevacantists moved into the space in 2007. Not sure if that matters to you, but if going to a valid Catholic mass does matter to you, they would not be performing what a Catholic would view as a valid mass at Sacred Heart (no more valid than a Catholic would view my own church Episcopal mass at any rate).

The diocese actually warned parishioners at the neighboring St Patrick’s Catholic Church (which took over Sacred Heart’s functions in the area) not to be fooled by them back when the Shepherds first moved into Sacred Heart and started presenting themselves as Roman Catholic. They’re not a legitimate Catholic organization.

My mistake. I go to the Latin Mass at CORPUS CHRISTI in Lawrence. I got the name wrong. Attending a VALID Catholic Mass means the world to me, so it DOES matter. I do know the church you’re talking about (having driven past it many times), but have never been in there. I noticed it one day and curiosity about the church did prompt me to google it and my search turned up the same story you linked in your post.

A dear friend of mine is a very traditional Catholic priest and has told me everything I need to know about sedevacantism and who to stay away from. He even specifically warned me not to set foot in that particular church you mentioned.

My wife and I lived in Methuen for about 4 years before we moved to our present location and we still attend Mass at our old parish there.

God bless you, Sir; and I will pray for your grandmother’s health this evening.
