Annointing of the Sick: Laying on of Hands

Well the parish I go to has annointing of the sick during the daily mass; 4th Monday of the Month.

Anyhow this church seems to rely on an abundance of ‘Altar Servers’(Adults not boys or girls) for all or most of their masses.

During the annointing of the sick, at the head of the line,there is an altar server who places his hands on you and prays before you go up to the priest for the ‘annointing of the sick’. I tried sidestepping this altar server as I dont see his role as either defined or legitimate. The altar server was persistent with me, but I succeeded. Unfortunately, when the priest administers the sacrament with the annointing of oil, he is supposed to say a formula to adminster it. This priest was silent for me and others.

Basically, I dont let anyone lay hands on me in a religious setting(Priests excepted) unless its properly defined by the girm or elsewhere, or I know WHO is laying hands on me.
Does anyone know of any rule of the girm, or elsewhere that allows the priest to choose minsters(alter servers) to lay hands on and pray over others during the administration of the annointing of the sick during mass.

My hope is if its allowed, then of course I would be protected(from malevolence) and could then go with the flow when I choose.

Those receiving the sacrament in such a situation as you descrive must posess the state of reason, be in the state of grace, and be in danger of death (grave sickness) but not necessarily at the point of death (immanent). Otherwise is is not the sacrament that is received, rather, a blessing. Do you know which it is?

1514 The Anointing of the Sick “is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived.”

The GIRM will not be any help to you in this matter. That document contains the rubrics for Mass, not for any sacrament administered during Mass. For the rubrics concerning the anointing of the sick you would need to refer the rubrics in the appropriate liturgical book for that rite.

I do not understand why this sacrament is being offered in general to the whole congregation. It is a misuse of the sacrament. The sacrament of anointing the sick is intended only for a specific group of people, i.e. those who are gravely ill.

The daily mass here is 90% retired people, some with walkers and oxygen.

From the rite for Anointing of the Sick with a Large Congregation:

108: … In particular, the practice of indiscriminately anointing numbers of people on these occasions simply because they are ill or have reached an advanced age is to be avoided.

In other words they must be seriously sick or infirm.

110 If there are large numbers of sick people to be anointed, other priest may assist the celebrant. Each priest lays hands on some of the sick and anoints them using the sacramental form

In other words the laying on of hands is reserved to the priest and also the priest who lays hands on someone must also anoint the one he lays hands on, using the sacramental formula, which he speaks aloud.

The situation you describe is an invalid attempt at administering the sacrament.
