My father(Manuel) was just diagnosed with cancer(PLEASE pray for him), yesterday he received the anointing of the sick from his parish priest. My mom was with him and said the priest(in the prayers he said while doing the annointing) said that if Manuel has any sins they are forgiven… she asked me this does that mean that my dad does not need to go to confession now?? Mind you that at this point my dad does not appear sick. I wasn’t sure----so I am asking you all.

Thank you in advance for your prayers and answers!!!

if the patient was able to confess at the time, the priest gave him that opportunity. Even if he wasn’t, in the sacrament of anointing of the sick all his sins are absolved. The priest told your parents that precisely so there would be no doubt, so your father should rest easy in this knowledge. He should go to confession in the normal course of things, should he ever need to in the future as anyone would. But that is his business, not yours or your mother’s. He can also ask for the sacrament again if his condition worsens, he becomes hospitalized, faces surgery etc. Will be praying for all of you.

i had the anointing of the sick this morning in preparation for some surgery. When he had finished anointing me the priest asked if I was going to Confession soon. I told him that I would be going tomorrow; he said that would be fine. He is very careful to dot the i’s and cross the t’s; so I think he considered it essential.

and I am sure the priest in the OP’s example was also conscientious when he told the gentleman his sins were forgiven, and if he had needed confession, would have told him so.

Gosh puzzle annie…are you married?? My parents have been married for 50+ years and I have been married 20+ years I considered part of my vocation as a wife and mother to get/assist my spouse/children in their journey toward heaven. So I believe it is her business. However this question really had nothing to do with it as she was asking for knowledge since neither of them has had this sacrament before. He/They will continue to go to confession on a regular basis.

Again please keep my father in your prayers!!

!!
matter for confession is not my business for anyone except me.
I have been married for 42 years, I don’t ask my husband when, if or why he goes to confession, he does not ask me. Once my children had been prepared for first confession we made sure the opportunity was available but not presume to tell them when and how to confess, nor would I do that to my adult children, that is way over the line.

If your loved one is in the hospital it is your resonsibility to get the priest there, it is not your responsibility what the patient and the priest discuss that may be matter for confession. Period.

Delete. Sorry, I didn’t read Puzzle Annie’s post closely enough and was repeating her point.
