Announcements at the Offertory

Hello everyone,

My parish has recently begun the rather disturbing practice of making parish announcements during the offertory of the Mass. It feels more or less like having a commercial break in the middle of Mass. I was just wondering if there is some rule to prevent things such as this or if there are any guidelines concerning it? That sort of thing can give people the impression that what is happening at that part of Mass (while the announcements are being made) is less important than the announcements themselves.

The proper place for announcements during the Mass is after (not before) the Post-Communion prayer. Announcements can also be made before or after Mass.

GIRM 90. The concluding rites consist of a. Brief announcements, if they are necessary …]

GIRM 166. When the prayer after Communion is concluded, brief announcements to the people may be made, if they are needed.
 
I don’t know if there are official guidelines regarding this, but it seems rather odd that one would so choose to do the announcements at the Offertory. Typically, the announcements are either done before Mass or after the closing prayer.
 
This has likely sprung from our Episcopal brethren. The BCP allows for a slight pause in the Episcopal Liturgy following the Sign of Peace (which is much earlier – it follows the Prayers of Petition), where announcements can be made. Then the Offertory occurs signalling the start of the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Several Catholic someones probably witnessed this and thought it would be a good idea.

I have heard that announcements should be as you say. They are not part of the mass and nothing should be added to the body of the mass.

If I was the pastor, my announcement would be: “READ THE BULLETIN!” 😃

But seriously, they don’t make all those bulletins for nothing.
 
Hi,

Several documents state that one should not change the Order of Mass nor its rubrics. Announcments are to be given at the end of Mass if they are, sometimes in the beginning, though I have not run into this practice much. The parishes I have gone to, don’t make announcements until the end.

The rubrics do not call for announcments at Offertory. IN fact what they call is a preparation of the Altar and Gifts. This is a time when one should be offering themselves and their prayers and things of that nature. It is disturbing to have announcements given at this time.

I am so tired, so very tired of the Mass being changed and Protestant practices sneaking in. This is on that needs to make an exit out the back door as well. Let’s focus on what is coming up, namely the Eucharist and Consecration, rather than announcements.

This is why I do not attend parish services anymore. I could not stand the deviations from the rubrics of the Mass.

However, pointing out the important bits in announcements at mass causes one to assume that the rest is unimportant; so many don’t bother to read it. 😦
 
Thanks for the replies everyone, sorry that I never responded sooner I have been out of town. I suppose I will just ask my Pastor if a change is possible and see how it goes. God Bless,
