Announcements During Homily

At my parish on Sundays Father begins every homily with about a five minute summary of what’s going on in the parish. We are encouraged to sell raffle tickets and things along those lines. He then speaks on something pertaining to the readings.

Is this an abuse? Does the Church have an official document that says to keep the announcements out of the homily?

The lector reads the announcements before mass begins, but I think Father wants to drill them into us.

I don’t see a problem with it, I think technically announcements are to made outside of Mass, but I really don’t know for sure. But then again, I really don’t see an incredible need for a homily most of the time anyway. Sorry, I just don’t. On Christmas Eve and Christmas, yes, Holy Week, yes, Easter yes certain other feasts and Holy days yes and on special occasions yes… Other times, I just don’t see it as being either necessary or relevent.

The central part of the Mass is and must be the Consecration. We must not lose sight of that in our zeal to be copycats of the Protestants to whom enormous amounts of preaching is necessary because they just plain don’t have anything else

In my parish, the announcements are made at the end of Mass, before the dismissal, which I think makes sense.

Is your Mass more like a performance, then Sacred Worship? Then maybe Father thinks it’s time for intermission. Announcments should only be after the final blessing. They should not be before Mass so as to not interupt the preparation time.

The GIRM indicates the proper placement of announcements, if any, is between the prayer after communion and the blessing and dismissal.

1. The concluding rites consist of

     *]Brief announcements, if they are necessary;
     *]The priest’s greeting and blessing, which on certain days and occasions is enriched and expressed in the prayer over the People or another more solemn formula;
     *]The dismissal of the people by the deacon or the priest, so that each may go out to do good works, praising and blessing God;
     *]The kissing of the altar by the priest and the deacon, followed by a profound bow to the altar by the priest, the deacon, and the other ministers.

   As long as the homily is otherwise suitable, I don’t know that making brief announcements at that point is an abuse. :twocents:

Our Priest does this. Infact he ramblings on with stories instead of an actual homily. But he is Irish and his stories are so good that it I love it, however I do wish we we would get a real homily at times. He is a dear man and getting up there in age.

I’m with you.

I think we have to cut some slack to our elder Priests.
I’d rather our Senior Priest tell a story than feel unwelcome and retire to FL.
