Here in our philosophy forum, we are going to start a series of threads that will cover a general introduction to Western Philosophy. We are going to have three series of seven weeks each. We can call our series Basic Philosophy Series 101, 102 and 103.

Timeline and objectives:

Philosophy 101 will Officially start Sunday October 30 and end December 18th, but, we can start before Sunday as some of us want to get started already.

Philosophy 102 and 103 will be two sets of seven weeks from January to the last day of April with a break in between. To be scheduled. In the whole month of May we will have our final review in the form of a Philosophy Trivia Game. At the end of our competitive game which will end May 30th, we will all be free to the elements and hopefully walk away from our experience with a good grounding in philosophy.

All are welcome to participate as students or facilitators. If you are knowledgeable in a particular topic, branch or philosopher and would like to be a facilitator for the thread covering your specialty please email me and we will arrange for you to start the thread when the particular topic/branch/philosopher comes up on our agenda. People will simply ask questions and you can try to answer them and serve as a guide.

Please refer back to this thread for general information, schedules, syllabus, reading assignments, etc… about our series.

Generally, in The Basic Philosophy Series 101 we will cover:
  1. What is Philosophy?
  2. General Introduction to the history of philosophy.
  3. A general but good introduction to the major branches of philosophy; Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, Aesthetics, Logic, Political Philosophy and other branches that are more specialized.
  4. If time permits, we can cover some of the schools and movements in philosophy; e.g. Aristotelianism, Scholasticism, Existentialism, and other -isms. Otherwise, we will cover these in Series 102.
Well, tomorrow I shall start the first thread which will be entitled: What is Philosophy?

Before embarking on a new endeavor it is always good to say a little prayer and in this case it is quite appropriate to pray to the Holy Spirit. Those who wish to join me with a little prayer please do.

Come Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.
V. Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created.
R. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

Peace,

Abba

I’m with you. This all sounds good. However, I may be reading more than responding.

Thank you,
granny

Amen. Looking forward to the series.
Welcome, jpjd, 🙂

I am glad we are going to do this. It’s going to be a productive endeavor. By the end of the series we would have covered the essentials.

I remember your thread on 'The Study Philosophy."

This series will be good, let’s hope, it’s what we make of it. It will give us the opportunity to study with others and discuss what we are learning.

The first thread has been started;
The Basic Philosophy Series 101 -1: What is philosophy and how is it done?

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=611391

You once said that you would like to get a whole picture of the field, the videoas and the link to a website covering basic philosophy on the first post (of thread 101-1) may help you to get an overview.

See you there,

Abba
