Annoyed by a sexist ad

It might be the case that there are strong men who are raised by a single mother, but that is far from the ideal or the norm. A large part of learning is through imitation. Most of our traits aren’t consciously chosen, but are learned through imitation. We learn what it is to be strong through imitating strong people. And strength is different for men and women, due simply to the difference in physical and personality traits. So having a strong father is important.
I am definitely not marginalizing the role a father plays in a child’s life. But to say that men raised by single moms tend to not be strong, able providers and protectors is pretty off the wall. They may have a harder time (which gets easier if they are still given the chance to interact with other adult male role models) but I wouldn’t classify them as weak.

That’s kind of like saying that a little girl raised by a single father has no idea how to be girly or feminine.

As far as fluffy degrees go, they do help in one way. They mean that you have a degree. That’s what gets your foot in the door. Many employers won’t even look at you without that, and some don’t even care what your degree is so long as you have one. Also, because people who have stupid degrees tend to be the ones that didn’t take their futures or educations seriously having a Master’s or higher in your field should you go that route is a must. That is what sets you apart. No, with a Master’s in journalism you won’t be working at CNN right out of college, but you will get a decent job for a popular newspaper in a medium sized city and work up from there. Without a Master’s you’re the person who has your degree because you had to major in something. With a Master’s you show that you actually have knowledge and passion when it comes to the field.

EDIT: And no matter what your field is it is becoming more and more important to get an advanced degree. With so many people graduating college that doesn’t set you apart anymore. I have a friend who graduated top of her class with a Chemistry degree only to discover that the only thing she could get paid to do is clean and store lab equipment.

This worries me, because eventually we’ll all just have to have PhDs to get a job. 😉
Ehh…too much to go in. I’m just gonna stop right there with the “agree to disagree.” 🙂

Well, an Army-Navy store generally carries items that men are more likely to enjoy than women. 🤷 I don’t see a problem in marketing to the majority rather than the minority. All of retail does this. Ever notice that Kohl’s always refers to its customers as she and her? Men can shop there too, but they market towards women.

I guess I’m trying to figure out what confuses me more: that the OP was offended by this ad or that people consider camping a man thing.

Actually I work with lots of men that were raised by single mothers - I wouldn’t want them dating my daughter.
So of course the best course of action is to “blame” the way they are on the fact that they were raised by single moms and then extrapolate that to the entire population of men raised by single mothers.

Good for you buddy.

I don’t want to imply that they are almost always weak. Only that there is something that a mother can’t provide (and obviously there is something the father can’t provide). So a kid will have a harder time learning to be a man without a father, but he can find other role models.

It’s sad that in the West, being a father is looked down upon.
…I think that that’s a pretty off the wall statement and if that’s the kind of notions you have about the west I hope that someday you are given the opportunity to travel here.

That was my realization when I was a men’s rights activist.

I’m hoping that it’s not “both”. Otherwise, I’ll go off a la Bear Grylls. 😃

Actually, it’s true! At least as far as popular media.

Look at the modern TV dads: always dumb, drunk, stupid, their smartalecky kids are wiser than they are.

Father Knows Best? Not today.
Leave it to Beaver? No way would Ward Cleaver be cast as a wise, loving dad today.
Mike Brady? No, he’d be one of the kids.

That’s exactly what I was trying to say earlier about how the media portrays men as “stupid”.
I totally agree:thumbsup:

And the moms are not loving, caring, nurturing, or strong. They are shrews, nags, and usually lack a personality. But I don’t model my life or my family after Family Guy. And in our society (not necessarily our television programs) being a father is still very much respected. No one looks down on a man because he has a wife and kids, except perhaps overgrown frat guys who still hang out at their old college bars when they are 35.

Mmm…not always.

But I get where you’re coming from. There are some shows that portray women that way. Negative portrayals of men and women by the media give people the wrong idea of what marriage is like, or what it should be like. These negative caricatures really affect peoples perception of the family and human relations a lot more than we consciously realize.

It’s a dangerous game the media’s playing and unfortunately, we, the public, suffer from it.

Oh boy…where do I even begin…

I’ll sum it up succinctly any Liberal Arts major lacking in anything Mathematical, Scientific, Technological, or Engineering wise is a worthless degree. So yeah all Art History, Communications, Theatre, Journalism…ect ect…All worthless

I’d also go all in and say Law degrees are worthless. Yes, and that’s because the nation is littered with them from people who majored in fluff woke up and realized they were gonna be working at Target when they graduated and decided to trade up, but they didn’t want to repeat 4 years of school, so they just decided to get a law degree (No offense BlueEyedLady).

Except that’s the problem women are not getting “paid less” than men. It is a complete myth. If you judge “pay” based on Income levels, of course men will make more. More men hold STEM degrees over women’s Liberal Arts…it’s a Supply & Demand. High Demand and Low Supply for STEM. Women who go into Medical, Technology, Mathematics, Engineering, Science…make a KILLING over the beta-male who majored in Pop Culture…you see where I’m getting at?
I think BlueEyedLady responded to this quite well already, so I am going to be lazy and not address all your points.

You seem to be speaking from an America centric perspective, so I cant say if you’re wrong and right. But speaking based on where I am from, a chemistry or engineering degree is no guarantee of jobs anymore. Which is sad, because they go through uni thinking they will get their dream job as soon as they graduate and that everyone’s else degrees are ‘worthless’. Then they get their rude shock.

Fact is no one gets their dream job right off the bat. Expecting that you will only leads to disappointment.

Communications, theatre, journalism - they’re all quite vocational in their own way and they really do open up doors for those who really want to enter into those specific industries. If people want to dedicate themselves to something, and are willing to put in the hard work for it, why is it wrong to major in those things? Maybe people look down on those degrees because they think they can do them quite easily. 🤷

My problem with degrees like engineering and medicine - they are specific to those careers. If someone with such a degree changed their minds suddenly about what they want to do with their lives, then they would be no better off than anyone else.

Maths and sciences can be general and cover a wide range of subjects, which is useful, but then again, if everyone were to major in them because it is the ‘sensible’ thing to do then there would be way more complaints of unemployment.

That is true, but is it new and is it bad? I think it could be argued that it is bad that women are so serious about themselves that they can’t be portrayed negatively. You have a negative portrayal of a woman and women’s rights groups are up in arms about mysogyny and sexism.
