Annoyed by a sexist ad

All the women in my family camp. They’ve also all been able to take apart a car and put it back together.

My husband’s favorite movies are Josie and the Pussycats, 10 Things I Hate About You, and A Knight’s Tale. Mine are Alien, Fight Club, and Skyfall. He loves malt liquors, wine coolers, and dessert wines. I love stouts and ales. He hates hiking and camping; I love being outdoors. He enjoys shopping; I find a pair of jeans that work and I buy four pairs so I’m set for a few years. He loves all the pop music gals and Top 40 music; I love prog rock and house music. He loves to cook and plan the kids’ birthday parties.

My husband is also very Alpha Male (big, hairy, Italian guy) and he loves football, so much so I think of it as his Other Wife. I knit and own a hot glue gun.

I’m not offended by the ad. I do roll my eyes when I hear things like that. I just take it in stride. If there was a Bed Bath and Body (or whatever the **** it’s called) ad appealing to guys, I’d be gobsmacked. That’s my double standard. (But guys do like good-smelling things. Hubby only gets candles that smell like sugar and cookies and stuff.)

I do see the OP’s point of view and, personally, would have designed the ad to appeal to buying presents for “the outdoorsy person in your life” rather than “the guys.” Maybe I would like some camping gear for Christmas, rather than a stupid sweater or, worse, perfume. That’s my side of it. Aim some of this cool stuff at my demographic so folks will think “Hey, Mermaid likes the outdoors. Maybe that bath stuff (which she gives to her husband) isn’t such a great idea this year. Let’s get her some gear!”

Just sayin’. 👍

Oh cmon, they smell nice…what should I shower with, horse manure? for that “manly” smell…yeah speaking of man-card this man would rather be smelling good and having his lady hang around him, instead of having her leave me, and me dying alone, involuntary celibate with my precious man-card :p:D

Besides it’s not like I shower with “Sugarplum fairy blossom”. But I do like the “Elixir Black” has a masculine but not strong smell. bathandbodyworks.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2650888&cp=12586965.12587141.4191834
Nothing wrong with that. I mean, if I were to walk past you and you smelled of brown sugar vanilla I might chuckle, but as long as you choose not too girly subtle scents I don’t see a problem.

I’m about to let the ladies in on a huge secret…even some of the most masculine, most burly, most rough and tumble men have their beauty secrets. Some use foundation to cover blemishes and zits, I’ve met one who uses secret deodorant because its the only one without a really strong smell that won’t stain his clothes. I know one guy who wears spanx because he’s gained a little weight and wants to hide his “muffin top”. Men want to look good just as much as we do, and sometimes they steal our tricks. That’s for good us though, that means more clean and properly groomed men for us to choose from.

In regard to the scented soap etc:

Just because males in general have weaker noses than females, doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy using them!

It’s nice to have some positive scents around to use our nose on!!!

One of the few exceptions to that, would be me.
I don’t have beauty secrets because I’m not handsome in person.

You don’t even use a girly face scrub? My construction worker brother, not a handsome man btw, uses an exfoliating apricot face scrub every night because being out in the cold at work chaps his face and he absolutely refuses to be seen with dry, chapped skin on his face.

Those are expensive where I live.
Hence, I treat items like facial scrubs to be only used at important events such as dining in some fancy restaurant, going out with friends, some very important gathering or whenever I try to cosplay some good-looking character.

Do tell! My husband’s face peels like he’s been sunburned during the winter. It’s a source fo embarrassment for him. He has an office job but he still has a lot of flaking going on. He had resorted to using anti-dandruff shampoo on his face and thick beard but I really think that cannot be good!

My fiance is the same way. His face was so dry that he looked like he had snow falling out of his thick beard all of the time. And it itched, and burned, and looked awful. He also wanted to use Head & Shoulders on his beard, but I wouldn’t let him, and you shouldn’t let your husband either. Dandruff is not dry skin, it is a skin condition, kind of like eczema is not dry skin, but a disorder. Shampoo, even if its meant to treat dandruff will dry out his face more and make the problem worse. We went to the drug store and I got him an exfoliating face wash and a good, high-quality moisturizer. He whined and complained that he didn’t want to be “girly”, but after one wash and moisturizer use his face was noticeably better. A week later and you can’t tell that he ever had an issue. He’s done whining about girly, he’s just grateful now.

It’s not a sexist ad. It’s targeted marketing. A sexist ad would be what Dr. Pepper put out for Dr. Pepper Ten. One ad (not linking because the website I found it on had an offensive slang term for women in it’s address; the site is run by and for women if the content is any indication)- Facebook has a way of making even the boldest guys act like gossiping schoolgirls. Followed with-
THOU SHALT NOT OMG. If it’s not exploding, it’s not exciting.
THOU SHALT NOT PUCKER UP. Kissy faces are never manly.
THOU SHALT NOT POST PICS OF YOUR OUTFIT. Unless it’s battle armor and you have a gigantic sword and/or small bazooka.
THOU SHALT NOT POST FURRY ANIMAL VIDEOS. Exceptions made for beasts fighting to the death and bears destroying idyllic picnic scenes.
THOU SHALT NOT MAKE A “MAN-GAGEMENT” ALBUM. That is all.
THOU SHALT NOT SHARE YOUR HOROSCOPE. Daily.
THOU SHALT NOT INSTAGRAM YOUR LUNCH. Real men eat lunch not tweet it.
THOU SHALT NOT UNTAG UNFLATTERING PICS. We know you were there.
THOU SHALT NOT END A COMMENT WITH A =)
THOU SHALT NOT MAKE A FACEBOOK PROFILE FOR YOUR PET, baby and/or imaginary friend.

Another example of sexist ads would be those Jared TV ads. “He went to Jared’s.” Got it, women only care about shiny objects and money. [edit- just for clarity, I’m indicating what the ad is trying to put across, not my personal views]

The Army-Navy store has just retooled their marketing approach. Men buy from their store for themselves and women generally buy for a male relative or friend. No different than those radio ads for chocolate covered strawberries. “Guys buy these strawberries, your wife or mom will love them.” (sexist would be “Guys buy these strawberries and your wife won’t burn dinner.”)

Oh I remember those commercials. The first one I heard was at Thanksgiving last year and I almost split my side laughing. I couldn’t believe they said that, much less in that quick, deep voiced tone. It was hilarious, and it worked. Just to prove them wrong I bought one the next day. Sadly it was awful though.

What’s a “man-gagement”?

Yeah I’m really annoyed by the phoney “Manly” culture. Of losers in their Old Navy clothes running around with their poorly-grown beards. Eating beef jerky, watching sports and buying whatever product because it’s “manly”…all the while they are at their woman’s beck and call. Like a kid saying he’s the boss and everything, until mommy says it’s time for bed and the kid scurries up to his room.

Grown kids is what I see in this lame-modern “manly” faux-culture. The media puts on. Real men aren’t afraid to express their love and be who they are. Being insecure (ie being ashamed of having Bath&Bodyworks products, or drinking Diet Dr. Pepper) is the most unmanly thing ever.

I salute you sir, for your courage! 👍

Actually they are being who they are. Overgrown boys raised by single mothers that have no idea how to be protector and a provider. Their male image is based on a combination of mom’s sleepovers, Calvin Kline commercials and variations of Jersey Shore.

Who buys “Bath&Bodyworks” when all you need is a bar of Dial for the shower and bar of Lava for the sink? 🤷

I do, Dial drys my skin 😉

But nah, I don’t buy B&BW regularly…but it is a treat to get them. I’m actually using Dial right now for showering. 😃

A man’s ability to protect and provide has nothing to do with his beverage or soap choices and everything to do with who he is as a person at the most basic level.

And plenty of strong, masculine, manly men have been raised by single moms.

Yep, my mother raised me since I was 13. I think I’m pretty strong and masculine 😉
