Annoyed by a sexist ad

It is probably sexist that all the world records for power lifting are held by men right? It is also sexist that it is The World’s Strongest Man rather than the Worlds Strongest Person right? After all, there are some women on this planet stronger than some men, therefore there is no difference between men and women.

With that said, if I were considering a gift to bring home for my wife (before we divorced) I wouldn’t have considered shoping for hunting knives but hey… maybe that’s why we’re divorced. :eek:

It may be difficult to imagine, yet the original poster said “but I got the impression from the ad that this was a very intentional re-write in order to be more “traditional” in regard to gender roles.” So I accept that evaluation in my post. I have see many advertisements that play upon stereotypes.

Generalizations are only that. To determine ability by a generalization is to ignore the individual. There are certainly some things that men in general or women in general do better than each other, but this may not correctly apply to two specific individuals. That is where the injustice can occur.

So because there are some adults who walk around in diapers and sleep in a crib (I actually saw this on tv), should we advertise diapers and todlers toys for adults? This gender neutrality stuff is a curse on society. We have to take a neutral stance on everything. In the end we have neither men nor women, not even hermaphrodites, just the eternally neuter ones.

So we are to pretend that everyone is neuter.

The fact is that 99 out of a 100 if I chose a man and a woman randomly, the man would be stronger. It is a fact of life that men are stronger than women. No woman will ever bench press 700 pounds, but some men do it. No woman will ever be able to compete with the men in the worlds strongest man. There is no injustice in recognizing the fact that men are stronger. There is also no injustice in recognizing the differences in personality between men and women, even if once in a while you get a woman who acts more like a man and vice versa.

Some are biological and others are behavioral. The focus is on behavioral in this thread.

And maybe survivalism (as in hunting and hiking and being able to support yourself in the forest, which was the subject of the ad in the op) is a male personality trait specifically because of the biological differences between men and women. Men have always been more dependant on being strong and being able to survive and support themselves and those they love. Just because some women now think that it is good for women to support themselves too doesn’t mean that survivalism is not a male trait.

Psychology and physicality are connected. My personality is dependant on my physical character as a man.

Real men are strong enough not to fall into media stereotypes. They openly express their love for their women. They are confident enough to show their passion for life.
Real men are humble, loving and honest. They are not the macho, arrogant, and deceitful, womanizers that they are portrayed as in by media.

Real men acknowledge that there is a power greater than themselves.

I can’t see your pictures, but I get your point. That said, I don’t know of anyone who pretends that the media stereotypes are what men are actually like and how men should behave. No one thinks that Al Bundy or Tim Taylor are the definition of a man. They are caricatures. They take something about men and turn it into a joke.

You’d be surprised. Not to that extent, but I know quite a few men who fit into the “stupid, macho, lazy, womanizer” stereotype. When you get to know them, you realize that they really aren’t like that. They’re just trying to fit in.

It’s sad.

I’ve noticed, in my age group at least, that when girls try to “fit in” they go slutty while guys act stupid. It has to be from media influence. What else could it be?

Because they have probably determined that is what will get them what they want. Girls dress like sluts because it attracts guys. Guys act stupid because in some way it attracts women or makes them look cool.

Yup, but they get those ideas from portrayals in media.
They going slutty thing I think is basic biology, I mean, any girl knows that if she wants to get attention from men, ya just show a little skin and act a little loose. But still, women are so sexualized and degraded now, women have even less respect for themselves than they did generations prior.

The men going stupid thing, that’s not biological. Actually, it’s counter-biological. Biologically, the smarter men would do better, provide better for the women. It’s culture based, the concept of men being stupid.

It’s ridiculous.
