Very, very few people can make it as a successful actress/actor. Getting a degree will not help you in the matter. A theatre degree may help you get work backstage but it won’t help you with auditions. If you don’t “look” the part the second you step into the audition…the casting director couldn’t care less about your credentials.

I agree…it’s disrespectful to belittle anyone who earned a degree in any subject. It takes hard work to earn a degree in any field.

What I don’t like is the upturned noses I get from people when I tell people I don’t have a degree. I’m apparently doing a disservice to myself and my family because I’ll never make any money with only a high school diploma and some trade experience. I’ll make substantially less money and am less educated.

I don’t think so. I have a house, I have plenty of savings and no debt. I’m on my own with a family and I couldn’t be happier. I can’t say the same for many of my friends and other relatives who are in their late twenties with no job prospects and have TONS of college debt they can’t pay off. The ONLY reason I’m getting a degree is because the military is offering to pay for it, the books and help me with my mortgage while I’m in school. I can’t turn that down. Otherwise, I wouldn’t even bother. I’ll never take on anymore debt that isn’t a mortgage.

Student loan debt is higher then credit card debt now. More and more people default now then ever before and everyone is still being told…you HAVE to go to college to do anything or get anywhere in life. That is a false statement.

Why is always the vocation kids I know that have stable lives, homes and families and the college graduates that seem to be struggling because they have to move back home with mom and dad, are pressured to get their masters and take on MORE debt and delay life events further like marriage and families because they can’t cope unless they finish school and get a job that is worth it to them.

Don’t tell me I’m doing a disservice to myself and my family for not going to college because I’ll be making “a million dollars less in my lifetime” then a college student…and I won’t tell you your degree in woman’s studies and the six figures you have in student loan debt isn’t a waste of your life.

I am sorry that people tried to shame you for the choices you made in life, which I happen to think were perfectly valid. I would hope however, that because of your experiences with being looked down upon, that you might understand why putting down the choices of others is unnecessary.

It is a very Western, even American thing where people who move back in with their parents are seen as failures. It is by no means an objective measure of success or failure.

If the ad mentioned by the OP is a serious concern of women, then they must have it pretty easy. If all you have to worry about is the fact that the local Army Navy store targets men with their advertisements then your worries are pretty minimal, and yes you have it pretty easy, because most people have a lot worse things to worry about than an ad that doesn’t specifically include them.

I have not been responding on these forums for awhile, but seeing some of the statements here regarding arts degrees was enough to make me come out of hiding.

austenbooten, I strongly disagree with your views on arts degrees. Calling them “worthless” and “fluffy bunny” degrees is very rude and disrespectful towards those who have pursued that line of education. I’ve noticed this occasionally on other threads as well…it truly amazes me the animosity some people have towards these areas of studies. They paint the incredibly diverse areas in arts, from fine and performing arts to the highly technical (and yes, mathematical) social sciences with the same brush.

I think you are misinterpreting what austenbosten is saying…I am an “artist”, myself and I completely agree with what he is saying. While I am good at art and enjoy it very much, it would be completely worthless for me to get a degree in that field. I need to look to the future and get a degree that will allow me to adequately provide for my future family. Getting a degree in art for me would be short-sighted and selfish in a way. I would ony be thinking of myself and my wants rather than the needs of my family. Now, that being said, I think it’s great to pursue a HOBBY in art or literature (I love literature ) but a degree and possible far-fetched career…nope. That would not be good.

Fluffy bunny degrees are in that perspective, worthless.

What Jimmy said. If this women’s “struggle” involves something as inane as an ad that doesn’t include them, then that is a struggle that is too picky. My post was in reference to, and referenced, the initial post, and the topic of this thread.

Exactly. It’s like woman who complain about the IKEA manual showing a guy put a bookcase together instead of a woman.
Priorities. Get some. I think that “everything is sexist” attitude is FAR better spent helping women in the middle east, helping women in African escape forced female circumcision, and helping the women of Hildale and Colorado City escape FLDS enforced polygamy.

In other words, you’re a first-world modern day woman. Your life as a woman is privileged compared to millions of others women around the world.

As far as degrees are concerned, there are times when you need to get more than one.
I know for a fact that Liberal Arts graduates have been know to get other degrees such as in Video Game Development or Information Technology.

Yeah, I agree. This commercial is nothing to get worked up about, if you ask me. I wouldn’t think twice about it.

Society had MUCH bigger problems to be concerned about. Worrying about whether or not an ad such as this is “sexist” seems like a waste of time…
