Annoying Concert Masses

Just a comment. I was at Mass today and a young musician played a complicated organ piece for a postlude. At the end those of us around applauded him. I had no compunctions about this for two reasons.
  1. Mass is ended. It is no longer a liturgical celebration, the recessional being over, the Priest and altar servers processed to the back of the church and the bulk of the congregation following suit.
  2. He is a young musician and we wanted to give him as much encouragement as possible.

Bless you heart! What a sensible and charitable post!

And I would venture to say that as you were applauding this young musician, you were actually applauding God, remembering that HE gives the talents, and He also gives us ears to hear with.

You are right in this. Most Catholics today have no real understanding of what the Liturgy really is – and that is of those who even bother to go to Mass. The other ~75% are completely ignorant. I think that the vast majority of American Catholics are going to be in for a very rude awakening in the coming decade when they will no longer be able to sit on the fence and wallow in tepid water – but that is for another thread.
Interesting.

What do you mean by this post?

Are you talking about a society that is becoming more and more sinful and evil, where Christians will be a hated minority (“extremists”), which will effectively drive away all the Christians who are just “social” Christians?

Or are you talking about some kind of “restoration” of the liturgy that will eliminate many of the contemporary trapping of the OF Mass and drive away all the Christians who come to Mass to be entertained?

Thanks.

BTW, I think that in most parishes, anyone who comes to Mass to be entertained has a pretty dull life! Frankly, when it comes to “entertainment value,” I would place Mass somewhere between watching the ants crawl into my family room whenever I drop a potato chip, and listening to the recorded message on the other end of the phone-in-time-clock at my workplace. Mass is just not entertainment! And that’s good!

I agree with this. I’ve heard comments from Catholics who were more in the 75% that JMJ_coder talked about. They didn’t really understand what mass was truly about. They looked at it as… If the mass didn’t entertain, there is something wrong with it. They wanted their priests to get up during the homilies and entertain. I remember a few saying how they wished their priests were more like ministers they saw at weddings they attended. “Now he really could entertain!” Yes, that was an exact quote. At another parish where this new pastor had got the parish together to talk about what they wanted in music, an older woman in her 50s/60s got up and said that she wanted to get their place jumping and shaking like a Baptist church. It would be more “entertaining”. All I could do was sit there and shake my head, and these older people couldn’t understand why a young person like me in her early 20s at the time would not want to go along with that. Sacred music should be experienced in a spiritual sense and not as a way to be entertained. It was such a huge turn-off to me. They were supposed to be role models for younger Catholics and here they were encouraging the use of music for entertainment purposes.

That’s not what mass is about. It’s not about entertaining myself and keeping me awake. It’s what I can do for God and give to God - my praise and honour to our Lord, to receive the Eucharist. And for me personally, to delve into a deep spiritual meditation through everything that goes on in the Mass from the music to the readings, the building, etc. Being a Christian and focus on Mass takes work, much like a relationship - only a spiritual relationship with God. It’s not always easy. And I think that is one thing some people don’t want to do. They don’t want to have to work at it. Those kinds of people look at Mass as a means to entertain.

i wish we could sing better songs i dont know how many “dumb/boring/meaningless” hymns we have in the book of hymns ( breaking bread 09) like breaking bread or the lord of the dance or the table of plenty and i have a whole list of others. but i honestly think we should only keep the powerful pretty hymns. also, is it bad to want to sing salve regina like they did in the sister act.? we should bring back the hymns of old with power and cheer i barely even hear anything but the gloria on the organ at our church. we need to bring back the tocatto, fuge, the hymns of the baroque period, like handel and such i dont care if handel was anglican the hymns are pretty and i’ve seen a few southern baptist hymns in my hymnal

Yes and yes. I see hard times ahead for Christians, particularly Catholics – and coming full steam ahead. I also see Pope Benedict leading the Church to a point where many lukewarm Catholics will not feel comfortable in the Church (to put it mildly) – e.g., I wonder what the outcome of the current doctrinal investigation of female religious orders in America will be.

As for Mass being entertainment, I recall a certain video online of a certain “Mass” out west with rock bands and big screens, etc. It seemed more of rock concert than a religious event of any kind (though they did have burning bowls of oblation which reminded me of the Oracle of Delphi :(). But true, generally Mass isn’t as entertaining as going to a concert or a movie.

And generally, I believe many go to Mass not to be entertained or to participate in the true Liturgy, but primarily to come away with what I term a “fuzzy inner feeling” - an emotional high.

I have a confession to make. I am a sucker for sappy Marian hymns such as “Bring flowers of the fairest”, “Behold a mystical rose”, “Sing of Mary, pure and lowly”, etc. – especially in this month of May. 😊

yes i do like the very sappy hymns but i just dont like the ones with no feeling there are a few of these at every church a lot are really good especially if they have power and praise god for his glory i like the hymn that goes " oh spirit who thy father sent to spread across the firmament"

I think you have made some good points.

However, I don’t believe that the Pope or the Magisterium will try to drive the lukewarm Catholics away, because these are the ones who are most in need of the Holy Mass. I think that many of the lukewarm ones will be wooed back into the Church if the Church takes itself more seriously.

I can’t help but wonder what would happen if the Church acted like the Church.

Really good music, the best possible (and that would include different styles, not just chant, since after all the documents do NOT exclude different styles of music, but ask that chant be given the place of honor in the Mass.) Well-played instruments, rousing congregational singing during hymns and Mass parts, good cantoring by someone who can be heard and understood, and above all, a GOOD sound system (not a "Mr. Microphone).

Riveting homilies well-prepared and well-delivered.

Friendly people–not in-your-face-hug-your-neck-bless-your-heart, but just honestly friendly and open and pleasant, with smiles. Not chitter chatter or false howdie-doodies, but friendly people.

I personally feel that my parish has much of this (the music is hit and miss). I think our priests could go head-to-head with some of the best Protestant pastors in town when it comes to “preaching”. And I think our people are friendly, not gushy, but honestly friendly. And we do see a lot of stuff happening in the parish–e.g., our diocescan pledge came in several thousand dollars over the pledged amount–we actually outgave ourselves! Another example is the number of people from our parish who participated in the 40 Days for Life campaign.

I think music is weak point in our parish, but you have to work with what you have, not with what you wish you had. There is a figure skating coach (I’ll try not to give away cities or names) who coaches synchronized skating teams, but she seems to always be coaching an “imaginary team,” not the team she actually has. She seems to think she is coaching a world-class team, and tells her skaters that they can beat any team in the world. But in reality, she’s coaching a very poor team of rag-tag skaters who aren’t tested very high and don’t spend nearly enough time practicing their singles skills, and this team has come in last place in almost every competition. I know about and believe in “praising people to success”–I do this with children all the time. BUT… you also have to be honest and face your inadequacies and start where you ARE, not where you WISH you were.

So IMO, we can’t always be wishing that our parishes had a huge choir with a brilliant pipe organist and a director who really loves and understands the traditional music of the Catholic Church! In reality, I think most of us have a volunteer choir with more enthusiasm than talent, a pianist who was trained to play Broadway, and a director straight out of the secular university. And we need to accept that and be content, even as we strive to always improve.

I don’t think they will “drive” them away – though I wouldn’t be surprised if a handful of excommunications did get issued or certain religious orders and/or communities got suppressed.

But, think about this. Take one of the lukewarm Catholics and drop them in China, India, the Middle East, etc. There our brethren are being thrown in jail, kidnapped, dying (preview of coming attractions here? :(). There you are either on fire for God or you are not a Catholic at all – who would be “casually” associated with a group that could and probably will get you jailed or killed.

Actually “Lord of the Dance” is one of my favorites. And it’s not meaningless. It tells of Jesus’ entire life story. but i honestly think we should only keep the powerful pretty hymns. also, is it bad to want to sing salve regina like they did in the sister act.? Oh, I get that stuck in my head every time we sing it in church. I don’t think it’s bad at all as long as your wanting it for the right reasons. we should bring back the hymns of old with power and cheer i barely even hear anything but the gloria on the organ at our church. we need to bring back the tocatto, fuge, the hymns of the baroque period, like handel and such i dont care if handel was anglican the hymns are pretty and i’ve seen a few southern baptist hymns in my hymnal
