Annulment, is it contradictory to scripture or not?

My dd’s dad is in the process (we are not married nor do we live together) and he is writing it out before typing. He has about 40 hand written pages and is still not finished answering all the questions. I believe that the tribunal will have a solid understanding of his lack of knowledge about the importance of marriage when he made his vows (he married a non-Christian and was never really taught about being equally yoked and the reason behind that teaching in the Bible,

…the priest who married them told him after the divorce that he wasn’t surprised b/c he knew they we’re going to have the issues they had that led to the divorce when they were going to pre-cana counseling with him - but the priest never addressed this fact in pre-cana, etc.).
nevertheless, as priest [acting in the Person of Christ] … he JOINED them didn’t he ?

So, I guess what he BINDS in Heaven … can be LOOSED on Earth ?

Matt 19:9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, EXCEPT for unchastity, and marries another, COMMITS ADULTERY.

So, is unfaithfulness the only valid reason the Church uses to let a Catholic remarry w/o committing adultery ? … [provided the first marriage was consumated, by mutual agreement of party A with party B].
And what about when the wife divorces her husband? Why is it made out to seem that only men divorce their wives? I’d be willing to wager (if I was a gambling man!) that most divorces are sought by the wives.

In my own case, SHE walked out on me and our 24-year marriage. A full year after the divorce, I filed for an annulment. It took 2 full years to be granted, but it eventually was proven that there were valid grounds for a Declaration of Invalidity to be issued. To this date, I have not remarried, although I am beginning to start looking around again. After 10 years of being “single again”, it may well be time to change that!

Theologically speaking, anullments are different than what we now call divorce. …he did give Peter (and therefore his successors) the keys to the kingdom and the power to bind and loose. Doing so, he also gave the Church the power to grant anullments.
Is this the way the Church really sees it ? Priests have the authority to directly contradict Christ’s teachings in Scripture ?

If Christ didn’t specifically address this [or any other] topic in scripture, then I can see where Peter’s Chair could bind/loose. But, to go against teaching of Christ is another matter entirely !!!

And what about when the wife divorces her husband?
According to scripture … the same applies to both husband or wife.

If one party doesn’t wish divorce, but the other demands it … then, separate, but, don’t give them their wish for a divorce. Hold them to their vows.

That’s what the wife of King Henry 8th did … 🙂 But, he had the power to have her KILLED…

That’s what the church is making of all who have an annullment - adulterers!
Well not ALL …

but, unless Christ allows his Priests on Earth to overrule his teachings in scripture, and rejoin those with annullments in 2nd marriages … the priests remarrying many of those annulled, are fostering sin of Adultery.

Remember Christ gave the Jews a hard time on their ease of divorce … saying “I HATE DIVORCE” , and it would no longer be accepted in NT times.

I agree with you totally! If you are going on the teachings of the bible then that’s what should be done. I’ve not read anywhere in the bible where a declaration of nullity along with a civil divorce was necessary to re-marry. It says a certificate of divorce, now doesn’t a divorce decree count as a certificate of divorce? I’ve not read anywhere that a marriage was deemed invalid either but here’s the contradiction.

I know I’m coming to this argument a little late, but speaking as a catholic, annulment is nothing more than “catholic divorce”, in my humble opinion. I think the whole thing was just made up to explain away the rise of catholics seeking legal divorces.

The early years of my marriage were very rough, and believe me, I thought about divorce. I could’ve given a dozen reasons why my marriage could’ve been deemed “invalid”. Deep down, however, I knew that it would all just be excuses to help me get what I wanted which was out of a bad marriage. So I did what I promised to do, through good times and bad, and thank God, because 10 years later I am now in a happy marriage to a guy that I learned to love again, and not to mention four great kids that never would have been.

How much has been lost to the church because we have given in to the cultural acceptance of divorce.
I think you nailed it ! 400 years ago we wouldn’t give a King a divorce. Now they are dime a dozen.

Someone tell me how Newt Gingrich got his marital status blessed by our Church ?

Mark 10:9 Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.

Are Catholics saying Protestant marriages were not ‘joined’ by God & thus illegit … because they lacked a Catholic priest ?

We know Protestant couples say their vows before man and God. I was the offspring of two Christian Protestants … was I illegit in the eyes of Cath. Church ?

The best answer is for those who enter Marriage, that they never seek to enter another Marriage unless their spouse has died. Sounds good to me!
Yes, … seems this is what Christ was saying too, and Paul’s interpretation of Christ’s words.

So, why did our Church go against many hundreds of years of Catholic history / traditions ?

If a protestant or a Catholic has been married in a CIVIL ceremony, J.P. or something like that, and divorces, he/she applies for a Lack of Canonical Form decree from the diocese in which they wish to marry once again - in the Catholic Church. This is much quicker and simpler to get, and just proclaims the persons free to Marry In the Church, since the previous marriage was NOT A SACRAMENT to begin with.
“Much quicker and simpler to get” … & "just proclaims the persons free to Marry in the Church, since the previous marriage was NOT A SACRAMENT to begin with.

so … they didn’t follow Canon Law. That’s their ‘valid’ excuse to get ‘quick & simple’ remarriage ?

I agree with 99 % of Catholic teachings … but, this topic of ‘easy’ Annulment just defies logic and the words of Christ.

All the Orthodox Roman Catholics so far, have not been able to defend our Church’s current teachings in this Thread. This is very telling, and troubles me greatly !!

Please, some Catholic, … teach me the truth on ‘current’ Catholic teaching … so I can be 100 % in accordance with doctrines.
