Hi, folks!

We are now in RCIA, and when the director gets back from out of town she will start us on getting my husband’s prior marriage annulled.

She doesn’t see a problem, as there was a prior bond for his former wife. But she asked if he had access to the marriage/divorce decrees for her first marriage.

Well, we don’t.

We think we know where the divorce was granted, so that probably won’t be much of a problem, as it is a fairly small city. But the marriage took place over 30 years ago, and while we do know the state (we think) we are not sure of much else.

Is there a procedure for getting this information? We do not know much about the first marriage.

Thanks!

Was the 1st marriage in the Church or by the Justice of the Peace or something else?

We really don’t have a clue.

Her parents are pretty active in their church, so I am assuming it took place in a (Presbyterian) church, but I do not know this for a fact. It could well have been a Justice of the Peace.

He has no idea if he was married in a Church or somewhere else or in what state??
Ok lets see then.
Perhaps he should start with the Church that her parents are part of…see if they have a record of it.
If not then he can go to the local Vital Statistics Office and see if they have a copy of it.

I also hope that your RCIA director told you that you both should be living as brother and sister till his annulment comes through.

No, no, no–he has no idea if his first wife’s first marriage took place in a church. He did not know her then, not her first husband, and it occured–we are guessing–in the early '70’s. We can also make a guess of the state. Other than that, no clue.

The question is "is there a procedure for finding documentation for prior marriages of prior spouses?’

Sorry that wasn’t clear.

Yes it should be on the marriage license
application that he and she filed out when they got married. So he would go to whereever it is that he and she applied for thier marriage license and they should have a copy of it.

Sorry about the confusion there…

Ah HAH!

Thank you!

That will be easy.

(And sorry I was confusing. I make perfect sense *to me…*but translating it to where it is sensible to others is a challenge;) )

Not a probelm…as long as he knows where he and she got married you should be able to track down the info…they may also have a copy of her 1st divorce decree as she would of needed that to apply for a new marriage license.
Anyways Happy Hunting:D

If she was catholic and you know where she might have been Baptized you could ask the Church. If her first Marriage was"in the Church" then it will be recorded on her Baptimal record as would an annulment if one was ever granted. A certified copy of this Sacramental record if it shows the Marriage but on Annulment would help a great deal.

I didn’t read the other posts before posting my reply. It does not apply based on the additional information posted. However I will leave it as the information may be of help to someone else.

Thanks, Bro. Rich.

I am sure there are others scouring old posts looking for information just like I am, so I am sure that info will benefit someone.
