Did I hear correctly that the feast and obligation day for the Annunciation was moved to this coming Monday, March 31st?

The Annunciation has been moved to March 31st in western Churches according to my calendar.

I was not aware that any western Churches regard it as a day of obligation.

Whenever a feast like that of the Annunciation falls during the Octave of Easter, it is translated (moved) to the week after. This is because the Church ranks the Octave of Easter higher than any other feast. Remember, the Church celebrates Easter day over the course of eight days, hence the term Octave.

While it is indeed an important feast, I agree with SMHW in that I, too, have not heard of a Western Church were the feast is obligatory. Now, it might be a holiday at the Vatican, though.

Yes, it was moved due to Holy Week and Easter Octave taking precedence over other all other feasts and solemnities.

Instead of being omitted, the US transferred it to Mar 31. It is not a Holy Day of Obligation in the US.

I didn’t think it was an obligation day but our bulletin for our parish has it listed as so. We have a mass scheduled for Monday night and the bulletin says it is an obligation day. Weird.

I guess so. I’m always up for going to mass during the week and for obligation days, but I really didn’t think the Annunciation was an obligation day.

I’m glad I asked people who know!

😃

Perhaps there will be a correction in this week’s bulletin, and you can always ask your priest to clarify at Mass this weekend.

The question then is, what is the name of your Parish? Often times a Parish will celebrate the Feast day of it’s Patron Saint with extra Masses ;).

It’s not a HDO in the US.

Even if it is related to the parish name it would not be a HDO in the US.

For goodness sake, I was just saying that the OP was saying there was an extra Mass on that day and the feast day of the Parishes Patron (in this case a Parish named Annunciation) would and could have extra Masses!

The point about it not being a Holy Day of Obligation had already been made.

Goodness has nothing to do with it 😃

Well, someone else must have caught it. It was in the electronic bulletin for this week, now it’s gone. Maybe they caught it when they went to print.

A dream of mine would be for U.S. Catholic Bishops to make the Annunciation, March 25, a non-transferable-to-the-nearest-Sunday-(unless-it-falls-in-the-octave-of-Easter)- holy day of obligation for U.S. Catholics. I think it would really help some Catholics understand why Catholics must be pro-life; it would really help the pro-life movement; and it would allow us Catholics to meditate more on and thank God for the Incarnation. To me, the Annunciation—when the Incarnation happened—is on the same level as Christmas and Easter.
