Anointing Service

Who’s parish had the Anointing Service this evening? Was it part of another service or was it done on it’s own? I always enjoy this service, really makes you think of think of your own death, and the need to keep holy. A great way to prepare for Pascha.

Had ours tonight. It was not preceded by or followed by any of the Holy Hours.

We did not have one, but when we used to, it would be in conjunction with Presanctified.

My UGCC parish had a Divine Liturgy, if I remember correctly from the bulletin, instead of Pre-Sanctified AND no Holy Anointing. The Ruthenian Parish had Pre-Sanctified with Holy Anointing though.

Essentially the same thing as chrismation in the OC.

We did have Holy Unction last night, Wednesday. We had the service, nothing else. I was at the Russian Orthodox the night before, Tues., and they had a final Presanctified Liturgy then, and on Wed. had Matins and Holy Unction. Like all our services in Great Lent, those this week are so rich. I found the hymns for Holy Unction especially soulful.

Essentially the same thing as chrismation in the OC.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, or Holy Unction and the Sacrament of Chrismation are two separate sacraments. Holy Unction is for healing and forgiveness. Usually the forehead, hands and any part of the body desiring to be healed are announted. During Chrismation the priest announts the forehead, eyes, nostrils, mouth, ears, chest, hands and feet. He says, “The Seal and Gift of the Holy Spirit.” indicating the purpose of Chrismation in completing Baptism with the granting of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. In the Russian tradition for Holy Unction the priest when annointing prays “O Holy Father, physician of our souls and bodies, heal Thy servant [name] from every physical and emotional affliction”
