Everything will be ok. You are literally converting, the priest isn’t going to chew you out. Go to a different parish if you have too. Start off the confession and just tell the priest that this is your first confession. Most priest’s are very kind in the confessional, and if you tell them this is your first confession, chances are they will be even more understanding. It’s a new thing so I understand you are nervous, but it will all be ok.

To answer the original question, go to a different parish behind the screen. The priest is not going to recognize your voice. His job is to act in the place of Christ who is loving, compassionate, and merciful.

FWIW - I went to confession today (behind the screen) with a priest I would consider fairly gruff and maybe a little abrasive in personality. Let’s just say he’s not from around here, so “Hoosier Hospitality” isn’t in his demeanor like I’ve grown accustomed to with our regular diocesan priests.

Anyway, I confess my embarrassing things first, a couple other items, and he says, “So that’s a nice list but which one weighs most heavily on your heart?” Caught off guard!! However, that was the start of one of the most meaningful and beneficial confessions I’ve had in a while, because he didn’t just rattle off the same old responsory advice I’ve heard a dozen times nor did he give me the penance I expected him to - he gave me something helpful specifically for my situation.

Point: Go in with a (bold) open mind and heart; you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised, even if it’s just how much lighter your load is on the way out.
