Another Acts 15 with a twist

Hi all,

I have just purchased an audio NT (NIV) and listening to Acts15:11-12 it states as shown below

11No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are." 12The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the miraculous signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them

Which suggests the assembly became silent because of Paul and Barnabas. If however I look into NASB or RSV the assembly is silent due to Peter. Which is correct? and why?

11"But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are." 12All the people kept silent, and they were listening to Barnabas and Paul as they were relating what signs and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.

I leave this to the more scholarly to debate,and please do not go off topic discussing general proofs for the Papacy as that is not the intention of this thread.

Wasn’t the whole assembly quite twice:
Once because of Peter’s talk and once because of Paul and Barnabus?

Does this mean that Paul and Barnabus gave a new teaching? No, they simply told stories confirming that the Gentiles had the Holy Spirit in their works, This was understandable, because Peter had allowed the Gentiles into the Church back in Acts 9 (or was it 10?).

Hence, Paul and Barnabus were giving creedence to what Peter was saying. Peter said we shouldn’t put the Mosaic yoke over our Gentile brothers. Paul and Barnabus were saying that the Holy Spirit was already at work in the Gentile Christians (without circumcision and other Mosaic Laws).

James says that Peter has spoken, and Scriptures back his words. …THEREFORE!!! James imposes some disciplines on the Gentiles. Actually, these are restrictions that God imposed on Noah far before Moses time. These restrictions are lifted later on in Acts (I believe, it’s Acts. It could be one of Paul’s Epistles)

In my Protestant days, I used the NIV, until I found out that it is a highly flawed translation. Acts 15:12 is not the only thing they got wrong!

I have several different translations, and they all say “and,” not “as:”
and they listened… (RSV)

and they were listening … (NASB)

and gave audience to… (KJV)

and were hearkening to… (Young’s Literal Translation)

and they heard … (Douay-Rheims)

Even the JW Bible gets it right. (“and they began to listen…”) And my Strong’s (which does have a somewhat Protestant bias) does not list “as” as a translation of kai. It says the word is used 9251 times in the Bible, and 8173 times it means “and.” (*Kai *= Strong’s Greek 2532)

The other translations are: “also, both, but, even, for, if, or, so, that, then, therefore, when, yet.” None changes the meaning of the passage the way the NIV use of “as” does.

Thank you guys for your (name removed by moderator)ut … I bought NIV expecting some small protestant inclinations although I thought that by being “international” they would try to be as partial as possible…guess not that partial on this one…
