Many people blame Ven. Pius XII because he allegedly did not protest the holocaust. The one time he came closest the Nazi’s rounded up Jews who had become Catholic and executed them. One of these was St. Edith Stein. He was horrified by the result of his statement. It can be surmised that he chose to be more careful to avoid innocent deaths due to his words. Yet now he is blamed because he did not speak out more boldly and to hell with the consequences.

Now Benedict has spoken boldly. People have been killed and property destroyed because of what he said. What he said was undeniably true. Yet now they are telling him to be quiet. Don’t upset the Muslims since we know how violent they are. Just go along quietly as they persecute Christians and wage terrorism across the globe.

If the Pope does this then at some future date will people criticize him for not speaking the truth and standing up to Islamic terrorism?

I agree, I made the same statement on a few sites. It’s unbelievable really in 1942 the NYTimes called the Pope “the lone voice against facism and Naziism in Europe”. In 1998 they said he did nothing and the Church needs to apologize for not stopping the holocaust.

Pope Benedict XVI is a brilliant man, his statement in one swoop was both setting the record straight by condeming Islams’ increase in using terrorism and spreading Islam through violence. And an olive branch to the Orthodox Church, by quoting a Byzantine Emporer.

I think this is an excellent analogy. 🙂
