Okay, people, let’s keep it clean. I’d like to talk about beds. More specifically, my husband and I want to buy a new mattress and box springs. Any advice?

Bigger is better.
Pillow top feels great, but some aren’t pillow top on both sides, so you can’t flip it.
Thicker is not always better. We had to buy new sheets with extra deep pockets to fit ours. And the extra-thick mattress and box spring add up to being too tall to sit on and put my feet on the floor, so it’s hard to put on my socks sitting on the bed! Plus, most nightstands end up below the level of the bed.
You get what you pay for, generally. But watch for sales, as some retailers have huge markups.

After five years of saving our pennies, my husband and I just bought a memory foam mattress. After one night we vowed to never, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER go back to a box spring and mattress set.

Like our Stearns and Foster pillow top.

Once a year when I go on retreat, I sleep on a memory foam mattress. Don’t like it. When I roll over, it feels like I’m rolling up out of a ditch. 😛

My wife convinced me to splurge for the pillow top…its niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

We got ours at a Sleepy’s clearance, didnt cost too too much. Should last many more years, its well made.

If you have the money my parents are very happy with the sleep number bed - that way you can adjust firmness depending on how you feel and you can have varying degrees if he and you prefer different firmness.

Close friends of ours have a memory foam mattress and love it. We tried one in someone’s guest room, and found it hot and uncomfortable. When our current pillow-top goes, we’ll be exploring one of those “Sleep Number” mattresses. Having survived 3 back operations I have to be very picky about comfort and firmness issues.

Air beds. All the way. Expensive and completely worth is. Your spine will thank you for years to come.

I second this. We got a great deal on Amazon.com and love our memory foam mattress!!!

My brother has one, and they have this problem too, where the mattress traps heat. My mom slept in one as a guest and (she who is always cold) sweated all night. I personally would find that horribly uncomfortable. But maybe the really expensive brand has found a way to negate that. 🤷

I slept in a sleep number in a hotel once, and I woke up really sore the next day. I don’t know if it was just the change in mattress (though I don’t normally have that problem) or if it is just impossible to find your sleep number on your own.

I have a memory foam mattress. I LOVE IT. But, it does trap heat. I wear very little when I’m sleeping, so it doesn’t bother me. but others might have an issue with it, if they are the ‘flannel nightgown’ club.

Temperpedic.

Love.It.

DH and I don’t know how we lived without it. DH had back problems until we got this matress. Yes, it can trap heat so people seem to either love it or hate it. We love it.

I slept on a “sleep number” bed at a Radisson hotel. Hated it. I won’t stay at Radisson any more because of those stupid beds. They are so uncomfortable. Yuck.

I guess the moral of the story is-- everyone is different so no matter what you hear on CAF you will have to be like Goldie Locks and find the one that is just right for you.

We bought a Simmons NXG, which is a combination of a traditional mattress with a large layer of memory foam over the top of it. First of all, it is the most comfortable mattress I have ever been on and that is in comparison to temperpedic, and many other popular brands. Second, our mattress got damaged during a move and Simmons replaced with the newest model free of charge. Unlike temperpedic mattresses, the foam that Simmons developed actually dissipates heat so that you don’t have the sweating issue.

I cannot recommend this mattress enough.

Baffle box down featherbed with 100% cotton ticking. It circulates air well, with it being cool in summer and warm in winter. There are hypoallergenic and non-animal fiberbed alternatives. It almost doesn’t matter what you have beneath it.

I have severe chemical sensitivities, and have been checking out mattresses that haven’t been sprayed with chemicals. I have figured out that the best bet is probably going with natural latex. Does anyone know anyone who has one of these?

What brand name is this?

Baffle box is the type of sewing construction. Cotton ticking is the fabric. You can get this in many brands. With your chemical sensitivities, I recommend doing an internet search for a baffle box hypoallergenic organic cotton featherbed. You can see the reviews and compare.

I am a traditional spring/box spring kinda gal…The firmer, the better.

But then I slept on a pillowtop on holiday and LOVED IT. Best sleep I’ve had in years. But it has to be a FIRM mattress underneath the pillow. Temperpedic would not work for me b/c I get hot on a normal mattress.

We’re not ready for a new mattress yet but I want one when we do…But then the flipping issue is a bit of a problem. Hubby leaves an indentation on his side. No, he’s not heavy, he just has a “force field.”
