We had a visiting priest tell us that if we ask ourselves if we would be comfortable cleaning out our garage in what we are wearing, it probably isn’t appropriate for the Sacrifice of the Mass.

I, too, live in Florida. I see some pretty skimpy outfits in church. They keep the air-conditioning in my church pretty chilly during the summer - intentional, perhaps? 😉

At the beginning of fall semester, as the college students were trickling in, the priest gave a good - not too harsh, but fair - sermon about dressing modestly for church, making the points several made here, that it says you think the Mass is important and God is important and worth putting on your good clothes for. He also mentioned getting ready early enough to arrive on time, because it is important, not an afterthought. Unfortunately, I see no abatement of the things he spoke about. 😦
i think that as followers of the shepperds, if the shepperds does not behave well in the Mass, then the followers could careless what the shepperds are saying.

Blessings…

 I don’t understand. Are you implying that my priest isn’t setting a good example?

It’s funny. I have a friend who belongs to a non denominational mega church. He scoffed at me when he learned of this little conversation. “God doesn’t care what you wear, why should you?”. I nearly jumped out of my skin.

Then I thought maybe I was being unreasonable.
I struggle with the same thoughts too. I mean it’s good that people come to Mass and perhaps God will work on their hearts to make them wear more appropriate clothes to church. I try not to worry about it too much, but I do have a pet peeve that drives me crazy to no end.

That is where I live, football jerseys are de rigueur for Sunday mornings in the fall, even at the 8:30 Mass. At my parish the majority of people are within a five to ten minute drive of the church and games don’t start until 1:00. So even if people were going to the game they would have time to run home and change or if that was impossible to do we have a Saturday evening Mass or the Cathedral has a 6:00 am Mass on Sundays.
