Another confession question

Say I received the Eucharist unaware that I had an unconfessed, possibly mortal sin. When I remember this and confess it later, do I also need to confess that I received the Eucharist in this state, although I was unaware of it? I’m thinking no, but I’m not quite sure. Things related to this question just keep popping up in my head. Thanks!

You must decide if the sin you forgot was mortal or not. It is a sin to intentionally not confess a remembered* mortal *sin. If a mortal sin is remembered it should be confessed before the next reception of the Eucharist.
 
No. The sacrilege of receiving Eucharist with an unconfessed mortal sin on the soul operates with the same dynamic that all serious sin does: the three requirements of gravity, knowledge, and consent of the will. You didn’t have full knowledge; therefore no sacrilege was committed. You need only return to the confessional before you receive again.

When you go to confession, you should inform the priest that you had unintentionally forgotten to confess a sin. It is quite common and need not worry though of course you should be sorry for committing a sin and promise to try not to repeat it.

What do you mean by “unconfessed” mortal sin? Do you mean that you haven’t been to confession since committing the sin, or that you’ve been to confession, but forgot to mention it?

If you have been to confession, but forgot to mention the sin, then it has been absolved and you are free to continue to receive communion. You should mention the sin next time you are in confession, but there is no requirement to abstain from the sacraments until then.

First of all, when we go to Confession, so long as we don’t deliberately conceal any mortal sins, all of our sins (even the ones we have forgotten) are forgiven. Should we remember and un-confessed mortal sin, then we must mention it that next time we go to Confession as and expression of our sorrow for having committed it. But the sin itself is already forgiven.

A person who forgot to confess a mortal sin in confession but was sorry etc does** not** need to return to confession any sooner or before they receive Holy Communion.

I assume here one means one forgot to confess the mortal sin – but have been to confession and made a good confession since the sin (they just forgot this one)…and where absolved.

Of course if one means that one forgot that one committed a mortal sin --but have not been to confession --then one needs to confess first before Communion.
