Not a huge deal, but I’m curious:
I bought a simple sewing pattern that I assumed the owner of a little store created herself. When I brought it home, I realized the directions were photocopied from a large pattern company, and the pattern itself was traced from an original. The store is 3.5 hours drive away from my house, and it would be an undo burden on my family to drive all the way back to get an $8 refund.

Is it okay to use the pattern, since I bought it in good faith?

Can you purchase this pattern from the pattern company since you now know where it came from?

Yeah, I’m thinking I should do that, and just eat the $8.
I’m just frustrated because I bought the pattern to save money. If I learn to make this simple bag, I can give them to people as presents. But there’s much worse things than loosing a few dollars. I’m also mad that the pattern from the company is for 3 bags for $11, and the one I bought has only 1 for $8. She’s actually selling it for more than the company charges.

Buy the pattern from the company, and then report her to the company and if she is selling on eBay report her there too.

I’ve thought of reporting her just on principle. While I’m almost certain that selling this pattern to me was illegal, there’s a chance she at least had permission to copy the pattern for her students. She does teach sewing classes. There were only 3 or 4 patterns like this being sold in the store, and several dozen that were packaged from the company. There’s a good chance that these were extra from a class and she just threw a price tag on them and put them out to be sold. While it’s wrong, I don’t feel comfortable possibly damaging her business because of this. If she had a whole business selling copyrighted/copied patterns, I would think differently.

Thanks for your help, 1ke.

Probably it is a copyright violation to sell the photocopy of a patterns. However, I doubt that is is a copyright violation to knit an item with the same pattern. If it were a trademark then it could be a copyright violation to knit the pattern but I am not sure. My guess is that you can use the pattern and report the sale of a photocopy to the original company.
