Another Easy Plenary Indulgence for Jan 1 - Veni Creator

Happy New Year CAF! I hope some of you got the plenary indulgence for yesterday (Dec. 31).
There is another easy one available today, Jan 1, that you can obtain for yourself or give away to a soul in Purgatory.

All you need to do is publicly recite the “Veni Creator” / “Come Holy Spirit”, as a prayer for the beginning of the year, and fulfill the usual conditions:
  • be in a state of grace when you say it
  • have no attachment to sin
  • go to confession within 20 days before or after (note: one single confession within 20 days will cover both Dec 31 and Jan 1 indulgences; you do not have to go twice)
  • receive Communion within a few days before or after (note: if you got the indulgence for Dec 31 and want to get the one for Jan 1 as well, you DO need to receive two Holy Communions, one for each indulgence)
  • pray for the intentions of the Holy Father (note: if you got the indulgence for Dec 31 and want to get the one for Jan 1 as well, you DO need two separate sets of prayers for the Holy Father’s intentions, one set for each indulgence)
As discussed yesterday, “publicly recite” means you say the Veni Creator prayer out loud in a church open to the public, such as before or after a Mass today, or at any place else open to the public.

Here’s a link to the Latin and English versions of the Veni Creator.
This most popular English version is often sung as the old hymn “Come Holy Ghost”.

I’m also pasting here my personal favorite English translation of the prayer, which is a literal rather than a poetic translation of the Latin. It’s hard to find this version online, so hopefully once it gets in CAF Archives it will pop up easily for those seeking a more literal translation.
Come, creator Spirit, visit the souls of your people;
fill with grace from above the hearts that you have created.

You who are called advocate, gift of the most high God,
the living fountain, fire, love and balm of the spirit,
You bestow sevenfold gifts;
You, the finger of God’s right hand, You, the duly promised of the Father,
Provide tongues with speech, kindle a light in (our) minds,
pour love into (our) hearts, strengthen the weaknesses of our bodies with perpetual vigor.

Drive the enemy far away, and give peace forthwith,
so that with You leading the way as our guide, we may avoid all things harmful.

Grant that through you, we may know the Father,
and also come to know the Son,
and may we ever believe in You, the Spirit of both.
Amen.

Father led us in this prayer at the end of his homily, in Latin. Now I just need to go to confession to qualify for the indulgence.

i have said it on Jan 1 ,please can you explain about what is the second set you mean ,is it the Our Father ,Hail Mary, Glory be and the I believe or is it the Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Whenever you try to get a plenary indulgence, then you must recite a set of prayers for the Intentions of the Holy Father. This is separate from whatever prayers the “indulgenced work” requires.

In other words if you said the Veni Creator on Jan 1, that’s the “indulgenced work”. You also need to do a separate set of prayers for the Holy Father’s intentions.

The minimum “set of prayers” for the Intentions of the Holy Father, in recent years, is one Our Father and one Hail Mary, recited out loud. You can substitute other prayers if you want. But I usually just say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, one Glory Be and then maybe say a couple of Fatima Prayers. I say them right before or after the Holy Communion I receive for the indulgence, or right after the Mass if I don’t have time at Communion, so I don’t forget to say them.

If you ever pray the Rosary with a group at a church or shrine, you might notice at the end they often will announce, “For the intentions of the Holy Father” and then everybody says an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. That’s so the group members can get the rosary plenary indulgence, though they usually don’t explain that’s what it’s for. I pray with two or three Rosary groups at churches and they all do this.

If you didn’t say the prayers for the Holy Father’s intentions on Jan 1, it’s okay to say the prayers for the Holy Father’s intentions today as they can be said within a few days of the indulgence day.

If you are trying to get the Dec 31 and the Jan 1 indulgence, you need two sets of prayers for the Holy Father’s intentions. This would mean you say out loud one Our Father and One Hail Mary for Dec 31, and one Our Father and One Hail Mary for Jan 1.

Ok, i have done that ,i got confused and assumed that the second set was the Prayer to the holy Spirit again

yes i did notice it, but didn’t know there was an plenary indulgence for the rosary

Done .THANKS A LOT for the info, will continue to say them

My last question is, do we need to say the I believe prayer also?

I presume by the “I Believe” prayer, you mean the Creed (“I believe in God the Father Almighty”…etc.)

You do not need to say the Creed for this particular indulgence. You can say it if you want but it is not required.

Regarding indulgences for saying the Rosary, please see section 17 of the Manual of Indulgences for the conditions for plenary and partial Rosary indulgences. Generally you can get a plenary indulgence by saying the Rosary out loud in a group, or out loud by yourself if you’re in a church or oratory. You need to fulfill the usual conditions for the plenary (state of grace, confession within 20 days, Holy Communion within a few days, recite prayers for the Holy Father within a few days, and have no attachment to sin).

Yes, i mean the Creed,

Thanks so much for the Manual of Indulgence PDF ,i lost it, some time back. i had a copy of it though.
GOD BLESS

Since we don’t know how much partial we’ll get, it could be a 99.9 percent partial.

Plus, as the Manual says, any partial is doubled. So even if we got only 50 percent partial we could achieve 99.9 percent with the doubling.

Thanks for posting, by the way! Also, my two favorite (and easy) ways to gain the plenary indulgence on a regular basis is either to read Sacred Scripture for at least 30 minutes at a time, or to go to Eucharistic Adoration for at least 30 minutes at a time. Of course, the usual rules apply (pray for pope’s intentions, confession, communion)…

Yes, Fr. Heilman calls them the “Big 4” ways to get a plenary any day of the year, meeting the “usual conditions” and doing either
  1. Adoration for 1/2 hour OR
  2. Scripture reading for 1/2 hour OR
  3. Rosary under the conditions stated in the Manual for a plenary Rosary OR
  4. Stations of the Cross at approved stations
I do 1, 2 and 3 quite a bit, and 4 from time to time. I’d like to do 4 more often but it can be hard to find an open church with properly installed stations. Many modern churches have Stations that are missing crosses, so I am not certain if they meet the requirements.
