Happy New Year CAF! I hope some of you got the plenary indulgence for yesterday (Dec. 31).
There is another easy one available today, Jan 1, that you can obtain for yourself or give away to a soul in Purgatory.
All you need to do is publicly recite the “Veni Creator” / “Come Holy Spirit”, as a prayer for the beginning of the year, and fulfill the usual conditions:
Here’s a link to the Latin and English versions of the Veni Creator.
This most popular English version is often sung as the old hymn “Come Holy Ghost”.
I’m also pasting here my personal favorite English translation of the prayer, which is a literal rather than a poetic translation of the Latin. It’s hard to find this version online, so hopefully once it gets in CAF Archives it will pop up easily for those seeking a more literal translation.

- be in a state of grace when you say it
- have no attachment to sin
- go to confession within 20 days before or after (note: one single confession within 20 days will cover both Dec 31 and Jan 1 indulgences; you do not have to go twice)
- receive Communion within a few days before or after (note: if you got the indulgence for Dec 31 and want to get the one for Jan 1 as well, you DO need to receive two Holy Communions, one for each indulgence)
- pray for the intentions of the Holy Father (note: if you got the indulgence for Dec 31 and want to get the one for Jan 1 as well, you DO need two separate sets of prayers for the Holy Father’s intentions, one set for each indulgence)

Come, creator Spirit, visit the souls of your people;
fill with grace from above the hearts that you have created.
You who are called advocate, gift of the most high God,
the living fountain, fire, love and balm of the spirit,
You bestow sevenfold gifts;
You, the finger of God’s right hand, You, the duly promised of the Father,
Provide tongues with speech, kindle a light in (our) minds,
pour love into (our) hearts, strengthen the weaknesses of our bodies with perpetual vigor.
Drive the enemy far away, and give peace forthwith,
so that with You leading the way as our guide, we may avoid all things harmful.
Grant that through you, we may know the Father,
and also come to know the Son,
and may we ever believe in You, the Spirit of both.
Amen.
