just be aware that the movie is not “historically correct”. leaving aside the apologist for the causes of the Reformation, look at the grossest of several historical errors. Luther is depicted as the champion of the poor downtrodden peasants against the oppression of the government, when in actual fact, he spoke out forcefully against the peasant revolt and called upon the government to suppress it with violence. He is also depicted as advocating separation of church and state (and that is presented, de facto, as a tenet of the Reformation). In actual historical fact, Luther advocated establishment of the Reform as state religion, and the submission of Church authority to the state. The propagation of the Protestant reform depended on conversion and alliance with the ruling factions, and played a huge part in the historical developments leading to European nationalism in later centuries. The spread of the Reformation was as much, or more, a political movement than and evangelization movement.
In the characterization of Luther, the movie does not develop what many consider to be a key part of his personality, and the reason for his activities–the extreme scrupulosity and problems with the sacrament of confession he suffered from.
