I have found that 99% of the time , when I make a comment on the Y video forum about Christianity, the Atheists are waiting like wolves to hurl all kinds of obscenities . Most are incapable of having a reasonable discussion without the hate.

You can tell that they have intelligence , but literally explode with anger on so many issues. And contrary to what is believed, Atheists differ on several issues and become furious when it is pointed out.

What significant stories do you have when engaging hostile Atheists on Y tube? Have any been productive?

They can no more prove the nonexistence of God than we can prove the existence of Him.

Therefore atheism is based on faith that we know enough to say conclusively there is nothing we don’t know, that can be considered “God.”

Faith is evidence of what we cannot see. If we could prove it we wouldn’t need faith.

They are angry because at some point they must face a cognitive dissonance. I tell them that the only honest atheist is one who leaves a little room for agnosticism. Not that God is like the God I’m describing necessarily, but something he’s claiming doesn’t exist.

You can challenge him to whether anybody would have guessed we could have a thousand conversations flying through our heads and with a little gadget (and sometimes teeth fillings when near antennas) we can tune in and listen to any one of them to the exclusion of the others. But then Marconi invented radio and now it’s taken for granted.

Or how about whether relativity existed in a world where Newtonian physics was TRVTH? Until Einstein, it was unheard of for any respected scientist to think they weren’t perfect and complete in all cases, include “extreme” ones that relativity and quantum physics have discovered do not play by the same rules.

They must get angry because their arguments don’t hold up. I give them credit that I cannot prove objectively there is a sentient God, and they can say what they want about how presumptive I am concerning what I think is salient evidence because it’s ultimately based on faith.

So the belief that there is no God, without any doubt, is itself a faith-based claim. So they are just as “religious” about sticking to unprovable claims as I am.

If they want to discuss point, counterpoint, fine. But if they want to get ugly I will have to get amused and console them, maybe even condescendingly. 😃

Let them taste of their own medicine – their arguments are so weak I can play on their turf (and invoke scientific evidence) and still beat them on their home court in front of their friends. They have itty bitty minds with itty bitty ideas and their anger protects those ideas from being challenged beyond their fragile mental comfort zone.

My own personal experience has not proven very fruitful. People now don’t really want to dialogue…they want to win arguments. Most people that I have encountered claiming to be atheists are very angry and when presented with calm facts that are opposite they get more angry. I really don’t understood it and I usually end up keeping these people in my prayers later that day. Of course, I am only one person with just my experiences and I am sure there is a huge variety of different experiences.

I have a very good friend that used to identify as an atheist but moved to agnostic and is now a Christian. He and I used to talk a lot about God and Jesus and religion. He is very intelligent and was calm and respectful when we talked. He listened and I listened and we each offered our views. That’s the way dialogue works but the dynamic with people these days seems to have changed 🤷

St. Augustine might disagree …
Maybe you’re right. 🤷

Or maybe I am right. Neither a God who is known through faith can be discovered and proven through observation and experimentation, nor the lack thereof. A reference to Augustine doesn’t tell me anything because I am not an expert on this saint’s writings.

Or maybe we both are right. I’m not sure that if Augustine did disagree, I am obligated to believe his argument. I certainly wouldn’t unless at least I hear a lot more about it, and unless you tell me the gist of it, that’s not gonna happen because I have a ton of homework and I really don’t care enough about arguing with atheists to go research Augustine’s works too. 😉

Besides, my goal was mainly not to educate them (like they will learn from me) but to convince them their angry arguments are not logical and I’m not buying them no matter how much they sputter over it. I don’t have to be 100% right about my claims to hold up in a philosophical debate, to know they are wrong. 😛

Y video channel is not well moderated – not for content, but for civility. I’ve not found it worth it to read the comments, much less engage other authors. Well, that’s not entirely true: I’ve often reached out to the posters of original videos with encouragement or compliments. Other than that, I really don’t see the point. There’s no actual discourse to evangelize or even explain the Faith. For some, it’s “word salad” liberally sprinkled with misinformation, misperception, and vitriol.

Great response. You are correct about the moderating. Often I have reported hate speech and harassment to no avail. Unless of course Y tube is notifying them and they don’t care. I know that I read somewhere that Y tube takes its sweet time to admonish individuals.

As of now, I’m steering clear of posting comments about my faith. Every so often you need to come up for spiritual water because the hate accompanied by psychotic behavior is distressing.

Take the comments no more seriously than the chattering of birds in a forest. This will give you a baseline of power. “Don’t care” is the most important position to have in any discussion. That makes you agile and non-judgmental.

Doesn’t mean you “don’t care, don’t care.” Just that no matter what anybody says, it can’t spoil your day. Why should we with brains, see dots on the screen and get upset about them? Would our cat care what words somebody has typed over the Internet, in terms of whether it’s enjoying it’s life right now? We can be emotionally stable to the point where our feelings don’t get jerked around any more than the cat’s feelings, just because of what symbolic words they typed.

When I was little, we used to say, “sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.”

I call it “mortifying ourselves” to those things that trigger us. Psychologists have a word for something like this, “habituation.” Get to the point it doesn’t pull your trigger; then you can see it more objectively and less anxiety.

That said, post a link or shoot me one PM if you want to check me for ideas how to deal with particular posts. 😉

If a true atheist was at peace with his belief, he wouldn’t be enraged at believers. He might think that believers were silly, but harmless. I find their anger curious.

I couldn’t agree more. Once in a rare while I would encounter a reasonable person that disagreed with me, but again most of the responses are filled with absolutely infantile rants. “Curious” is a good word. Frankly, since the percentage of Atheistic responses are so vulgar and childish, it really does speak volumes.
