As someone who plans on entering the Jesuits after high school…I get that newsletter (its more like a newspaper).
I was shocked and appalled to read his article, as it only decreased my confidence in the orthodoxy of the Order.
I know that there are the good Jesuits and the bad. There are the good and the bad in every order…but in the Jesuits it is really polarized to the extremes. There are a lot of major liberals…but conservative and obedient Jesuits are VERY conservative and obedient. And I admire them.
So I saw this article and I’m thinking “what the hell?” It doesnt come right out and advocate gay rights…but it pretty much suggests its not all bad…saying stuff like “as a heterosexual couple, have you ever talked to a homosexual couple about shared relationship troubles, maybe you should try” and I believe it refers to natural law as “so-called natural law” or some such thing. It suggests a relativistic teaching on homosexuality, not based on logic and philosophy, but on “getting to know” homosexuals and coming to see that they arent all that bad.
Hearing that they cracked down has made me MUCH more optimistic about the state of discipline in the Church, a more orthodox future for the Jesuits, and my vocation.
