Sorry if these type of threads is a recuring theme here, but I would like to get some answers. Is masturbation healthy? Is masturbation a mortal sin? What are some strategies that you employed to overcome the habit of masturbation? I feel a little uncomfortable discussing this topic, since I’m still in my teens . Thanks.

It’s not healthy (some people say that it’s useful to “take away stress and relax”, but there are so many sin-free ways to take away stress and relax!), and yes, it’s a mortal sin (don’t ask me why - I’m lazy to answer :)) just do a search on the forums, it was discussed many times).
I sent you a PM because I don’t like to discuss my story in public.
My advice would be - find a priest you really trust to, and confess to him everything with most honesty - and, ask him to pray about you. It may help, like it helped me.

The Church Teaching:

CCC 2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. “Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.” “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of “the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved.”

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.

I know some may tell you otherwise, but it is healthy. It does take away stress, it does help you get to know your body, and no, it does not make you blind (an old urban legend to frighten us teens–more for you though because you’re a boy 😛 ).

The only unhealthy quality of masturbating is the time it takes away. If you get too “addicted” to it, you’ve got a problem in your hands :rotfl:].

Religiously, it is a sin. To overcome it… find a hobby, hang out with friends/family, be out and about. 😃

I dont believe Masturbation is a sin, but I go along with the church because it says it is. I think masturbation is as normal as taking a breadth of air,& I do believe it is healthy for You & I think it`s crazy that when U have a wet dream , if U take pleasure in it That its sinful, I have a hard time with that. I do not believe that grown adults because they arent married, shouldnt have sex, Most of them do anyway. We are sexual beings, God gave us our sexuality. It is impossible to repress the sex drive

I also deal with this problem and am a teen like yourself, so do not worry you are not alone. I agree do search the other threads, they have some helpful tips. 😉

Been there,…done that,…
Perhaps the real question is whether or not one should get married.
Or if one is truly desirous of seeking holiness and submission to the Will of God.Then it is merely a matter of self-discipline.

😃 Hey man I am teen to and I have this problem. It is very much a mortal sin. IF you want to try to get over this problem I woulds suggest setting goals for your self. Ex I will not Masturbate for 3 days etc.You need to do go to confession every single time you masturbate. Your not alone with this problem . I still struggle with it as well. I hope this helps :blessyou:

Thanks for the responses. I will try to set goals to free myself from this habit. Confession frequently is one of my goals 🙂

You cannot take pleasure in a wet dream because by definition you are asleep when it happens.
Anyone who masturbates (that is done when awake) takes pleasure in it. There is no such thing as masturbation without taking pleasure in it. Nobody does for it health reasons. If anyone says that they are only trying to justify their sins.
No its not healthy because it separates you from God. You commit a mortal sin and reject God’s love endangering your immortal soul.

I think all men masturbate, whether married or single. To not masturbate is a tough fight One that I think cant be won. All boys masturbate & it carries into manhood. So maybe the church calls it a sin, but it`s still being done by the mass of people

Masturbation isn`t going anywhere, almost everyone does it, its natural

You can say the same thing for Infidelity, beastiality, and homosexual relations.

What I really don’t like is the openess people are starting to have with it. It was shameful when I was young and should stay that way.

The Church does not maybe call it a sin. The Church teaches it IS is grave sin.
If you are Catholic you MUST ACCEPT that.
The fact that people do it does not make it right.
Christ did not say following him would be easy but he is your only way to salvation.

Other things that are natural:
lying to protect our egos, anger (esp. acting out one’s anger), vengeful actions/wishes, gossip – and the cardinal sins of sloth, gluttony, greed, pride…

Shall I continue?

Natural tendencies =/= natural law.
Many of our natural tendencies stem from our fallen nature. The point is to triumph over them, with the help of grace.

Perhaps what is most natural is the attempt to justify the actions that we do that are the most difficult to extricate from.

If the church tells me something is a mortal sin I abide by it, & If I commit it I will go to confession, but personally do not think it`s a sin. I think its a normal natural act
