bookcat 5:39,I answer that{:how do youlike the Acquinas retort} …you split hairs,a subjective ,and a object view indeed! We are not talking about object sin , all sin is subjective that was my question ,cld sin be subjective ie mortal objectively and not mortal subjectively.?? we can not have mortal sin slipp(name removed by moderator) into venial sin ,who cares about venial sin anyway!. If you say mortal sin can slip into venial, then can the reverse be true?venial into mortal??. The aspect of delibert consent intrigues me,who in their right mind wld delibertly commit a mortal sin,? fullwell knowing it brings eternal punishment?,only an idiot wld make that choice!,and wld an idiot be responsible for his acttons?,in the words of John Wayne " not likely ". so he who wld committ a mortal sin wld not culpable ergo we all go to heaven!!!wbradl,i havet get dragon my mind works faster than my poor typing ability…w bradl
I do not split hairs I give the needful answer. See the Catechism. And various works of Catholic moral theology.

We are to care about venial sin - and deliberate and unrepented venial sins can yes dispose a person to commit a mortal sin.

People yes commit mortal sin unfortunately.

One does not have to advert the reality of the eternal punishement --to the effects of the mortal sin in order to commit a mortal sin. Usually what happens is one focuses on the thing that they want to do…while committing a mortal sin. Deliberate consent does not have to mean that --though it can involve such.

to bookcat, again thanks for the reply. my questions are meant to get people to think [so little of that goes on tdday]. you really can,t appeal to the catechism, and catholic moral theology and say thats that I’ ve proved my point, thats like saying the IRS doesn,t lie’ I asked them and they. said they don,t! We care about venial sin as it may dispose one to mortal sin,yes it may, but the obverse is also true, mabey it dosen’t.Your last paragraph confuses me. I don’t think anyone looks to the effects of mortal sin to committ mortal sin,I said in essence you wld have to be “nuts” to entertain a sin that condems you to eternal punishment. Delibert consent means one is fully aware of the seriousness of the transgression, and that involves the punishment. When you were younger, if you spilled a coke your dad did not pull out a gun and shoot you…see, the punishment did fit the crime,or you cld examine the punishment and judge the severity of the crime. But alas we stray,oh look I see a hair on the floor,it is split on one end,or is not the end but the beginning !!lol w bradl

This is a Catholic Answers Moral Theology forum – referring one to the Catechism etc for a fuller explanation is quite fitting.

I was am not here engaged in a “defense” of what the Church teaches and what Catholic Moral Theology discusses --that is not the purpose of these posts. Rather to provide what the Church Teaches and to explain what that is and to discuss the theology involved. Hence again it is quite fitting to refer readers to sources that will assist in their understanding.

Yes it is contrary to reason to commit a mortal sin. But unfortunately people do so.

As to adverting to the reality of the punishment – that is not needful to commit a mortal sin.

And we care about venial sin too for it is well --sin.
