Timothy Timothy … please … the facts of history and what was discussed at the Councils of Nicea and Chalcedon are not REVISED HISTORY. What we say happened is not different that what was said since the centuries they took place. The Catholic Church is not giving these ancient Councils a “new spin”. AND there is no revisionism going on in showing in the historical record that several of the books presently in the NT canon debated as to their inclusion in the NT canon. Again I state that the Catholic Church could have functioned very well without going through Church Councils to place her authority on a canon of NT scripture. However, the Protestant Church couldn’t survive and, in fact, almost didn’t survive when Martin Luther wanted to eliminate James from the canon because it didn’t validate HIS STANDARD for canonic inclusion - namely, giving support to his doctrine of justification by faith alone. Fortunately, for the Protestant movement cooler heads prevailed OR TODAY we might be arguing that the Catholics were so blind to see that the letter of St. James was prove positive of a gospel of works that was fomenting in the Church even in the apostolic age. And don’t tell me you wouldn’t try to do it – because there are Protestants who STILL try to make that argument. Had Luther prevailed NO DOUBT that would be your REVISIONIST SPIN – GUARANTEED!!
THE KEY HERE is who is your primary source for interpreting the text of the Bible. Mine is the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC APOSTOLIC CHURCH. What’s yours?
MonFrere
Again; you can believe what you want about the Bible; you ignored the fact that God is the author and the one who brought it to us ultimately which is why I could careless about your Catholic preference on giving the Bible to the world.
I understand why we have such different understandings of Scripture; here is my source:
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Cor. 2
And ye have an anointing from the Holy One, and ye know all the things. 21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it 1 john 2
“If you continue in My word, {then} you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not I only, but also all they that know the truth; 2 for the truth’s sake which abideth in us, and it shall be with us for ever: 3 Grace, mercy, peace shall be with us, from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 2 John 1
{that is} the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, {but} you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
"When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, {that is} the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,
My comes from the Person of the HS; this certainly sets us apart since you make the claim yours comes from a church.
I leave you with this final word from God; perhaps you will see my point. Read Proverbs 2:
1 My son,
if thou wilt receive my words, And lay up my commandments with thee; 2 So as to incline thine ear unto wisdom, And apply thy heart to understanding; 3 Yea, if thou cry after discernment, And lift up thy voice for understanding; 4 ***If thou seek her as silver, And search for her as for hid treasures: ***5 Then shalt thou understand the fear of Jehovah, And find the knowledge of God. 6 ***For Jehovah giveth wisdom; Out of his mouth [cometh] knowledge and understanding: 7 He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright; ***[He is] a shield to them that walk in integrity; 8 That he may guard the paths of justice, And preserve the way of his saints. 9 Then shalt thou understand righteousness and justice, And equity, [yea], every good path.
10 For wisdom shall enter into thy heart, And knowledge shall be pleasant unto thy soul; 11 Discretion shall watch over thee; Understanding shall keep thee: 12 To deliver thee from the way of evil, From the men that speak perverse things; 13 Who forsake the paths of uprightness, To walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who rejoice to do evil, And delight in the perverseness of evil; 15 Who are crooked in their ways, And wayward in their paths: 16 To deliver thee from the strange woman, Even from the foreigner that flattereth with her words; 17 That forsaketh the friend of her youth, And forgetteth the covenant of her God: 18 For her house inclineth unto death, And her paths unto the dead; 19 None that go unto her return again, Neither do they attain unto the paths of life: 20 That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, And keep the paths of the righteous. 21 For the upright shall dwell in the land, And the perfect shall remain in it. 22 But the wicked shall be cut off from the land, And the treacherous shall be rooted out of it.
