Another question for Muslims about understanding the Qur'an?

I’ve been told that the Qur’an as it was revealed in Arabic, it is the duty of each and every Muslim to learn to recite it in Arabic.

And this is a query of mine- how many Muslims REALLY understand what they’re reciting? I’m not talking a ‘well, this is ayah 11 and this is a translation of what it means’’ type of thinking, I’m wondering as to how many Muslims can read Arabic as they’d read their own languages and actually understand the grammar and vocabulary meanings of the Arabic script.

I ask this because I have met Muslims who, despite being able to recite Arabic, don’t actually understand it at all as a language in its own right. I’ve also read Bosnian articles where it is argued that there is an unfair scholarly and religious bias towards Arabic speaking Muslims.

Few understand it. That is why, there must be and Arab Spring in the mentalities, above all religious mentalities.
Islam cannot go on being what it is, with the surreal interpretation that the experts do of it, cutting hands and feet, beating women, killing non-muslims, poligamy…
Islam must give a 180 degree turn. Funny, they are in the year 1200 which for us it would be the Middle Ages !!!

It just seems weird that there’s this emphasis on learning Arabic passages when so few actually seem to understand it.

BTW, it’s the year 1432 according to the Hijirah calendar. My calendar on my computer is set to the Islamic calendar.

The Arabic language is one of the toughest languages to learn and understand, worst than that, we have very complex rules specially designed for reciting Quran called Tajwid, so I agree with you, I think most non Arabic Muslims don’t understand what they are reading, and that should raise a question mark on whether Islam is universal or not…

I’m aware of Tajwid, as my own Qur’an has color-coding in it to help in learning the rules.

I personally find Arabic to be decently easy…although I have a certain gift for languages.
And why is that?
I have no idea…

Now, They can have it translated to their own language so they could understand it more.

Now I almost converted to Islam, and I was told time and time again in the madrassah that translations aren’t a true Qur’an. Only a Qur’an in Arabic (something that is said in the Holy Qur’an itself) is Qur’an.

That sound right. My Muslim friend (albeit not a very strong one at that…doesn’t go to Mosque on Fridays but has not doubt in his mind that Jesus is only a prophet), that the only Quran that should be read is the Arabic one.

He can’t read Arabic though. 😛

You have no idea why your computer calendar is set to the Islamic one !
Maybe there is a Muslim Jinn in your PC…😛
On a more serious note, it’s set like that so I can read Arabic newspapers and can understand the dates.
