I have been a long time Catholic, yet I don’t remember ever being tought about the Scapular, could someone tell me how it should be handled? I got one as a gift recently.

The scapular is worn over the shoulders with one square in front and the other in back with everything under your clothes. A priest or deacon can invest you with it using a short ceremony in the book of blessings. The investment with the scapular makes you a member of the Scapular Confraternity. The obligations for members are 1) wear the scapular habitually (it is after all the habit of the confraternity) taking care not to wear it superstitiously but rather faithfully. 2) Live chastely according to your state in life. 3) Pray daily the Little Office of the BVM. This can be replaced with the Liturgy of the Hours (Divine Office) as the LOTH is the daily prayer of the Church and thus the highest ranking Office. With the permission of the priest, you can instead substitute 5 decades of the rosary for your daily prayer requirement. The reward is the Sabbatine Privilege, in which Our Lady of Mount Carmel will bring you to Heaven from Purgatory on the Saturday after you die, should you end up in Purgatory. If you go straight to Heaven or to Hell, then the Sabbatine Privilege does nothing. Some people wear scapulars and include the Carmelite spirituality in their prayer lives without ever being invested, but they don’t receive the Sabbatine Privilege or the 3 obligations.

The Scapular Confraternity is officially a part of the Carmelite Order which has the following levels of membership:
1st order: Monks
2nd order: Nuns
3rd order: Lay Members
4th order: Public Confraternity Members (i.e. an organized chapter that meets regularly, usually as part of a parish.)
5th order: Private Confraternity Members (those who don’t belong to such a chapter, but are still invested)
At this point people are not official members, but still a part of the spiritual family:
6th order: those who wear the scapular but are not invested
7th order: those who are into the Carmelite spirituality but don’t wear the scapular at all.
