This is a basic questions thread.

What IS speaking in tongues? How would one know if they have this gift?

… Even at the time of Christ, the variety of tongues spoken by citizens of the Roman Empire caused problems for those attempting to spread the new faith. The Acts of the Apostles tell us that, at the time of the first Pentecost, the Apostles preached to crowds of Parthians, Medes and Elamites, and to pilgrims from Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphilia, Egypt, Libya, Rome, Crete and Arabia.
Despite the fact that the Apostles would have preached in Aramaic, their words were understood by everyone because the Holy Ghost gave them the gift of tongues. But, after the death of the Apostles, when the gift of tongues had all but disappeared, it was still necessary to ensure that the doctrines and liturgy of the new religion could be clearly transmitted to everyone, no matter what language they spoke.

The Gift of Tongues is the God-given ability to speak in a previously unknown languages so that another may hear the truths of the Church and/or the Gospel. As a side note the Spiritual Gifts are intended for the *sanctification of **other *souls not our own. Therefore they are meant to be used as a ‘public ministry’. My EF Parish priest, Father Saguto, gave a wonderful homily on the Charismatic Movement and its dangers; I wish they posted their homilies online I’d love to share it.

From reading the Bible it seems (to me at least) that speaking in tongues means somebody else here’s you in their own language. The modern-day “speaking in tongues” are part of the pentacostal movement trying to copy Catholic ideas (like Bishops, fasting, etc. things that mainstream Protestants abandoned) without fully understanding what the things exactly were.

Protestants may be picking up bishops again (some Baptists in Africa are really into it).

Wikipedia says … 119 Million Charsimatic Catholics in 2003 within the Universal Church. Movement started in 1967, in USA. Was saluted/encouraged by Pope JP2.
Thats 10% of all Catholics !!

How can Father Saguto speak out against it ?

Because it pleas strictly to the emotions and in most cases is used only for the sanctification of one’s own soul as a means of ‘proof’ of God’s existence. I wish I had a copy of the homily so I could post it; it explained it very well.

Seems Pope Benedict also supports Charismatic Catholics … 🙂

Does the Orthodox laity know more than our Popes ?

I’m not saying that it isn’t supported, I’m just saying that it is often a misuse of the Charismatic Gifts because they aren’t being used for their intended purpose as shown in Tradition and Scripture. For instance, the type of “Speaking in Tongues” used by Charismatics IS NOT what is shown in Scripture, and therefore should be avoided as it could possibly not be of God. The type of Speaking in Tongues used in the Scripture was intended as a means to preach the Gospel to those who speak a foreign language, not the strange unintelligible utterances used by Charismatics (Catholic or otherwise).
