Referring to the so-called “Cadillac tax” on high-end health plans, he said: “They proposed it and that passed, because the American people are too stupid to understand the difference.”
Gruber specifically was referring to the way the “Cadillac tax” was designed – he touted their plan to, instead of taxing policy holders, tax the insurance companies that offered them. He suggested that taxing individuals would have been politically unpalatable, but taxing the companies worked because Americans didn’t understand the difference.
This is similar to remarks he made at a separate event around the same time in 2013. In a clip of that event, Gruber said the “lack of transparency” in the way the law was crafted was critical. “Basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical for the thing to pass,” he said.
I wish I could honestly disagree with him.

But isn’t there something wrong with a person who intentionally misleads a group of people then lambasts them for believing him as stupid?

Nothing more wrong than an administration that is deaf to reality and which actively undermines the basic foundation of society (the family). It’s just another example of the mentality at work in our government.

John Roberts could have stopped the ACA dead in it’s tracks ,instead he did the mental gymnastics necessary to get it through.Gotta wonder what the Dems had on him!

Well, to be honest the man was right.

We can all pretend otherwise, but the average American voter isn’t intellectually gargantuan.

Sad thing is, there is no outcry about his comments, and probably doesn’t have much impact on how most people feel about Obamacare. He has called its supporters stupid, and they are okay with that.

Not one single Republican voted to approve this monstrosity and to this day the American electorate by and large are opposed to it. They really pulled a fast one!

Maybe in this particular administration but I wouldn’t trace it much further back than Clinton and not much deeper into most agencies than the appointed officers.

Why do so many people on this board hate the idea of public healthcare? Is there a rational basis for it or is it just a Republican party mindset?

Because it is an incredibly poorly thought out effort, which is driving up the cost of healthcare, increasing the cost of research and disincentivizing investment in it, driving doctors out of the system, greatly reducing options people have for managing their own care, reducing options for treament etc. etc. etc.

Because the politicians pushing it wouldn’t even take the time to explain it (because they didn’t understand the 2,000+ page monstrosity themselves), refused to listen to their constituents, and had the audacity to state

We have to pass it to know what’s in it.

Like any of those folks would have signed some kind of personal/business contract for themselves without having it fully explained to them and understanding its impact on them.

I think Obamacare is worth saving with some modification. Why?
  1. it is not a single payers system. We are the last industrialized state without public health care. Obamacare started in the right direction with the state run exchanges, using the private markets to provide funds to people who need health care. But since the GOP was not allowed to give any (name removed by moderator)ut, it has deep flaws to it and needs serious rework. We will either modify and correct Obamacare or we will eventually end up with a single payer socialized medicine disaster.
  2. We need health care for those who cannot afford it. The old way of relying on charitably funded county hospitals to give free health care does not work in an age of unfettered illegal immigration. Illegals have overwhelmed that system I personally know some people who were denied medical care because the public hospital ran out of money and the need was not life threatening.
  3. If this plan were implemented better it could use market forces to lower the cost and provide health care to millions who need it. Saying ‘too bad’ is neither compassionate nor Christian.
  4. Correctly implemented this could drive down health care costs and pharmaceutical costs as well.
Yes, I know; I just kissed the devil, didn’t I?

😃

This thing was built to fail so they can come back and shove single payer down our throats

I think some tried to poison it that way, but that doesn’t mean that they will be any more successful with that than they are with anything else.

Just saw a clip of Nancy Pelosi, today, stating she has no idea who Johnathan Gruber is.According to NP,Gruber had nothing to do with designing the ACA.
Then a clip of NP in 2009 shows her discussing the ACA,she mentions Gruber by name and his role in the process…:eek:WOW! Lies, lies and more lies!!

Hmm…I wonder why this is getting so little play in the mainstream media? 🤷

So that’s your opinion on public healthcare in general, or just this implementation? I only ask, as being Christians, supporting a system (or safety net) that catches the downtrodden and less-fortunate is a no-brainer.

We already have such a system in place. No one is turned away due to lack of ability to pay.
What this fraudulent administration has foisted upon the American people is immoral. They lied every which way of Sunday to push this through, shame on them!

And the healthcare system we had up until now was working so much better, right? 😉

I don’t live in the US, but the image we see internationally is one where a person must mortgage their home for life saving surgery. If they can’t afford it they go without it.

Again, I am ignorant on the American political system, but isn’t it hard to get these kind of bills through a hostile congress? I don’t agree with willfully misleading the public and there’s always consequences to pay when it’s done, but it sounds like the deception was on corporate multinationals not the common people, or did I misread the quote?

That’s what confuses me. This forum has countless horror stories where members have asked for prayers regarding difficult medical related issues that are almost always coupled to a dire financial situation. I am therefore perplexed how some on here are opposed to a public healthcare safety net.
