From ‘The Roots of the Reformation’ by Karl Adam

Frederick the Wise, the famous protector of Luther, had built up his treasury of relics in the Castle Church at Wittenburg to 18,885 fragments. Anyone who believed in and venerated them could gain indulgences amounting to two million years.
Hi pablobe,

Not sure what that has to to do with civil and churches authorities, including the pope, defending doctrine and therefore many practices on indulgences , as infallible/binding.

Frederick dealt very little with Luther, and remained a Catholic all his life. He did not help Luther because of any doctrinal belief , but one of principal and law, believing that he had done nothing “illegal”.

I know the errors Leo was countering. I understand Exsurge Domine. By the way, contrary to what other ill-informed posters have stated, Leo did not consider all 95 theses in error.
Hi D,

Perhaps I should have been more specific (and knowledgeable), pardon me. I meant to say from recollection of general information, that every point of contention, of accusatory error, by Luther, was defended by the pope and powers mentioned. That is, that Luther was wrong on those points of contention, and no error was admitted by the church, at least not before the final schism, or before and thru the “trial”. Maybe during the counter reformation. Not sure if Exsurge Domine admitted Luther was right on any of his criticisms.

The Spirit of Truth comes from Jesus. Jesus said those who hear you hears me. So our Fathers’ (Apostolic Faith) are our parents who are our guardians… So we are certainly not orphans. Unless we reject this?

“I have made you known to them, and **will continue to make you known **in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.” - John 17:26 NIV

Your post #48 seems otherwise.

Hi a,

So if two orphans are adopted by parents with equal love, yet one lives happily in a middle income neighborhood and the other upscale, uptown, the former is still an orphan?

May we agree that the orphan believes, rests in, understands neither in 66 books nor in 73, and is altogether destitute, unregenerate.

Sure and we can also know a more fuller truth if we choose, only because the Advocate is with us!👍

Hi a,

Not sure about knowing the truth more fully as much as knowing the Advocate more fully, first, by His graces.

And His graces is what makes us more sure!👍

Hi a,

reminds me of an old song we used to sing :

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
