If brain damage could cause him personality and behaviour to change, he reasoned, then personality and behaviour are determined by brain chemistry and there is no soul that can be responsible for our deeds. If there is no soul and if we cannot be responsible for our deeds, then the Bible is not true and there is no God.
 
Well that was a long road to a wrong conclusion.

Then we won’t have to go over this again.

We’ve had a rash of new threads on this. Is it something in the air?

Or is another forum swarming (trolling) CAF?

Your are free, at any given second, to make one decision or the other. Neuro-chemistry does not directly determine your choices. Even those with pathological neurochemical imbalances exercise free decision and free thought to a greater extent. So, personality and cognition are more on the side of permanent dispositions and habits. Those can change, as science and experience themselves prove.

So your friends first premise is wrong, no need to address a false conclusion drawn from a wrong premise.
 
At CAF there are many soul-brain threads, but some are not that useful. For example, the thread you started last week was a bit scattered. The thread I linked above seemed like one of the higher-quality discussions of the topic. Did you read all of it? If so, what is still lacking?
 
A lot of non sequiturs.
Personality and behavior would be affected by physical damage. This doesn’t imply that it is completely about such.
At most parts of the Bible would be untrue (if his previous conditions were valid, but they are not) which would mean sects that declare the Bible true in its entirety would be false, but that also does not imply that God doesn’t exist, at most it would mean God did not inspire the Bible to be perfectly accurate in these matters as we understand them.

I think he has a faulty view of the soul. In Catholicism, there is a very close connection between the body and soul. So much so that we believe in the bodily Resurrection.
