I think you have to measure the event with the probability of the event happening naturally. After a while, when the coincidence becomes so startling, you start to say to yourself “Come on. This can’t be just a chance event.”

Of course in scientific terms there is no way to repreduce the event in a lab environment, so there is no scientific way to say God, or St. Anthony caused event A to happen. So the bottom line is there will always be someone who can choose to doubt a miraculous event, no matter how strange, and wonderful, and obvious it may seem to us.

In my opinion, if God is using St. Anthony to perform these small miracles, it is for the benefit of our faith, to increase our faith and hope. It is a small sign of his love for us. But sometimes the small signs of love are the most reasuring signs. They show that God cares about us, even in the trivial details of our lives, like loosing a key, or finding a lost cat.

Amen to that! Being often at sea or up some creek … Pray as if everything depended on prayer and work as if everything depended on work. God has gifted us with the gift of intelligence and physical ability and expects us to use those gifts. Intelligence tells me I need to get the boat to shore and physical ability gives me the strength to row towards it in the hope of getting there…praying all the while!
