Well for the first time in my journey home to the Catholic Church I am experiencing doubts about my calling. It all began when I did some study into the Eastern rites of the Catholic Church. In short, I am falling in love with the Byzantine/Melkite Rite of the Church. This however placed me into contact with Eastern Orthodoxy, which I have found to be highly anti-Catholic in nature. They claim to be the true Church Jesus founded, and unlike groups like Mormons, the EO have valid Apostolic Succession to back up that claim.

As I am introduced to Eastern Orthodoxy, I find that I am more spiritually filled in the Eastern ways than in my own Roman Rite. Personally I find the Roman Rite to be well…spiritually dry. The Eastern emphasis on the Trinity, the mystery of Faith, and their awesome reverence for the Eucharist is sooooo appealing to me.

For the first time I am beginning to wonder whether or not Catholicism is the truth. I hear of Catholics who become Orthodox and that scares me. They claim they have found the genuine Apostolic faith!

I prayed to St. Peter the other day, asking him to ask Jesus to reveal to me which Church was genuine. So far, I feel God has answered me with a resounding yes that the Catholic Church is the one. But how can I know for sure that God is answering me???

**In any case, I am finding it increasingly difficult to answer Eastern Orthodox claims about themselves and claims about the Catholic Church. It seems the Catholic Church is strong on defending herself against the Protestants, but touchy about taking a stand against the Eastern Orthodox. **

The worst part of this is that I am not being spiritually fulfilled in my own Roman Church. It just doesn’t have the awe of the liturgies of the East. I live in the Deep South, so it is a blessing that there is even a Catholic Church in my county. As far as I know there is not a single Eastern Catholic Church anywhere I live, BUT ironically there is an Eastern Orthodox Church LESS THAN 5 MINUTES FROM MY HOUSE!!!

I am tempted to go to the Divine Liturgy at the Eastern Orthodox Church on Sunday and not to the Catholic Church, but I know that that would be a sin since the EO are in schism. I am soooo confused! Any thoughts???

There is no salvation outside the Church. The Church was founded on Peter. The Pope is the successor of Peter. In my view, leaving communion with him would put your salvation in jeopardy.

If you can find a TLM, you can experience the same reverence and mystery that the Orthodox have maintained in their liturgies. If not, frequent Eucharistic adoration may be the best option you have.

Could you please use the teminology Eastern Catholic Churches and not “Rites”.

I apologize. I meant no offense. I am simply trying to find some advice, that’s all.

Since you love the East, why can’t you be an Eastern Rite Catholic ? You’re right about the Orthodox Churches though, their is a lot of negativity toward Rome you’ll be pretty much expected to embrace.

Since you love the East, why can’t you be an Eastern Rite Catholic?
Two (Three) reasons:
  1. I am only eighteen and thus tied to my general area.
  2. I am in RCIA preparing to receive the Mystery of Chrismation.
  3. There are no Eastern Catholic parishes in my area that I am aware of.

I understand exactly where you are coming from. I am 19 now, but had only begun to take my faith seriously since last year. It was the East that saved my faith, and it brought me back to Catholicism.

I began to attend the Tridentine mass, and having attended the Ancient mass irregularly for the last year, I can only say that it is awesome. Now I am confident I will either remain a Tridentine attender or an Eastern Catholic, because the current ordinary form of the mass, rightly or wrongly, always leaves me feeling alienated. I am however, feeling that very same dryness you describe. I am just as confused as you are - and it is no fun.

Though for whatever reason, I know I can’t leave Rome. I was raised Catholic, and then I found Christ - during an Eastern Catholic Divine Liturgy.

I know Rome has nourished me for so long, and it continues too, perhaps you can say that you had a similar relationship with Catholicism?

In any event, pray and study, God will guide you to where you should be.

p.s.

I know its easier said then done, but don’t let your faith be dictated by location, God will provide a way, try not to be troubled by where the various Churches are.

I feel for you. I entered the Church last year (was 17 when I officially entered, but Catholic spiritually at 16). I’m 18 now, and in my area, the Latin Rite parishes are more Protestant than the Protestant churches! It was tough for me to stomach for a while, but I knew the truth was only in the Catholic Church and the Catholic Church alone.

In my case, I found a Maronite Catholic parish. I was extremely blessed to find one. I’m seriously considering a Canonical Transfer, because I identify with the Maronites moreso than with the Latin Rite. The richness of the East, is an amazing thing. There are many types of Eastern Catholic Churches, so you never know, there might be one there for you.

The Orthodox do sometimes make a convincing argument, but my priest (Maronite) told me something invaluable. The Orthodox don’t have a leader, and Christianity isn’t a democracy, meaning that they can’t just take a vote and decide that way if something is doctrine or not.

You’re in my prayers. If you want, you can PM me your zip code and we can see if there is an Eastern Catholic parish in your area.

WOW!

God truly does provide a way. Just a couple minutes of research I have found a parish only about 45 minutes or so from my house:

Even more amazing is the fact that their patron saint: St. Ignatius of Antioch, was one of the key early Christian writers that helped to facilitate my conversion to Catholicism. 👍

Thank you, Harpazo and Freshman88!

It is soooo good to know that there are others who feel the way I do!!! WHEW!!

Ye, well I think it has to do with the fact that it is the protestants that attack us and that most Roman Catholics live in countries where Orthodox are not very strong. On the other hand you will find that many Orthodox are very bitter against Catholicism.

But you don’t want to leave the Church founded by Christ because of the Liturgy, do you? I recommend you pray to God about it every day and He will help you. Look for a TLM or if you want to go east start attending an Eastern Catholic parish if you find one.

That’s awesome! God does some amazing things. Are you by any chance still in High School, or attending college?
