Answering "hate religion, love Jesus"

I hope you don’t mind me borrowing your responses! You did such a nice job giving thoughtful responses to the poets issues. I’m going to spread THIS on Facebook. 👍

“This poem highlights my journey to discover this truth. Religion either ends in pride or despair. Pride because you make a list and can do it and act better than everyone…”

But pride can also manifest itself in making a YouTube video spouting off a bunch of unsubstantiated and poorly conceived anti-Church cliches. Here are some things this guy says, and my thoughts in response to them:

"What if I told you, Jesus came to abolish religion?"
I would ask you why Jesus didn’t tell me this himself.
There’s lots of stuff Jesus said in the Bible, but “I came to abolish religion” isn’t in there.

"If religion is so great why has it started so many wars?"
It hasn’t started any wars. Economics is the real reason behind wars, so make an anti-economics video.

"Why does it build huge churches…"
Like the Temple in which Jesus prayed, taught, paid the temple tax, and drove out money-changers?

"…but fails to feed the poor?"
The Catholic Church is one of the largest charity organizations in the world. Add the charities run by Orthodox Churches and Protestant denominations and you have the poor being fed in every corner of the world. My parish helped establish the local food bank, routinely staffs it with volunteers and takes up 12 collections each year to help support it.

"Tells single moms God does not love them if they’ve ever had a divorce"
Uh, exactly who ever said this?

"But in the Old Testament God actually calls religious people whores"
Yes, but the specific religious people being referred to were idolaters.

"Tend to ridicule God’s people; they did it to John the Baptist"
Uh, exactly who is doing this ridiculing of God’s people?
And John the Baptist was not ridiculed. The Pharisees questioned him, and refused to accept him, and Herod Antipas imprisoned him and executed him, but I know of no instance of him being ridiculed.

"It’s just behavior modification…"
Ever hear of the Ten Commandments?

"…like a long list of chores"
Ever hear of the Book of Leviticus?

"I ain’t judging, I’m just saying…"
Well that’s good to know.

"Quite putting on a fake look, because there’s a problem if people only know you’re a Christian by your Facebook"
I thought you weren’t judging.

"Because if grace is water then the Church should be an ocean…"
My parish baptizes between 70 and 100 people a year. How’s that for some grace-filled water?

"…It’s not a museum for the righteous but a hospital for the broken"
My parish has an ER and an ICU. It’s called the confessional.

"I don’t have to hide my failure, I don’t have to hide my sin, because it doesn’t depend on me, it depends on Him"
A sentiment shared by every person who goes to the above-mentioned confessional.

"Which is why Jesus hated religion"
I didn’t know Jesus hated anything. And where in the Bible did Jesus say, “I hate religion”?
Maybe it’s in the place with that other hard to find passage about Jesus coming to abolish religion.

"Don’t you see it’s so much better than just following some rules?"
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)

"But if Jesus came to your church, would they actually let him in?"
He’s already there.

"He was called a glutton and a drunkard by religious men"
And other religious men called him “Lord” and the “Son of God.”

"But the Son of God never supports self-righteousness, not now, not then."
This is very true!
As a matter-of-fact, every time I feel compelled to create a YouTube video to tell people what I think is the proper attitude they should have in order to be true Christians, I remind myself of the dangers of self-righteousness and refrain from doing it.

"Religion puts you in bondage, while Jesus sets you free"
I would like to know of one thing that my religion has enslaved me to that Jesus wants to free me from.

"Religion is man searching for God while Christianity is God searching for man"
I thought Christianity was a religion.

"Which is why salvation is freely mine, and forgiveness is my own, not based on my merits, but on Jesus’ obedience alone"
And this is a doctrine taught by the Catholic Church, all the Orthodox Churches and all the Protestant denominations. This guy acts like this is some sort of new revelation.

"That’s why I literally hate religion, in fact I resent it, because when Jesus said ‘It is finished’ I believe that he meant it"
And what exactly are you saying here? That when Jesus died on the cross it was supposed to be the end of religion? Then explain how you would have known that Jesus died on the cross for your sins without religion as a vehicle to preserve and teach this to every generation for 2000 years?

And I believe that when Jesus established the Church and gave his followers the Great Commission, he literally meant it.
Exactly how does a person have a Church and obey the Great Commission not in the context of a religion???

This video is about a guy(I don’t know what denomination) who believes Jesus was against religion. He was above it. I am Protestant, and I think this is absolutely true, and that this video is amazing! What do Catholics believe about Jesus being against religion & this video?

is it just me or is the link to this particular video suddenly all over this web site. I think I’ve seen it in at least 5 different threads. Coincidentally enough each asking basically the same thing

The video is coming up because it has become incredibly popular on youtube (on the homepage). That being said, I would direct the OP to this thread: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=634230&highlight=response+to+this+video
and the other threads where this video has already been discussed.

Then why did a start a 2,000 year old religion called “Christianity”?

Jesus was not against religion, only against misuse of it.
If you read the gospels and the letters of the the New Testament, and the Acts of the Apostles, you will see that His apostles accepted the mandates of Jesus Himself to create a Church community with leaders.
That is the simple answer. If you want a deeper one, we can give you countless texts to support that.

May God bless you. 🙂

I regard this video as heresy. Let us pray for people to come to their senses and seeking the truth.

Matthew 16:18.

"And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

John 10:10

“I am come that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly.”

Hi Komeeks. I am a Georgian by choice. 😉

And as a fellow Georgian, you have probably seen the billboards along the highway and the signs on the side of the road which say things like “JESUS!.. Not Religion”. But the fact is that Jesus was very religious.

Jewish men were requried under the Law of Moses to go up to the Temple in Jerusalem three times each year and participate in the feasts. Jesus was faithful to this religious requirement throughout his life.

After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. (John 5:1)

But the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near. So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. So Jesus said to them, …"You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, because my time has not yet been fulfilled.” After he had said this, he stayed on in Galilee. But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, he himself also went up, not openly but [as it were] in secret. (John 7:2-3,6,8-10)

The feast of the Dedication was then taking place in Jerusalem. It was winter. And Jesus walked about in the temple area on the Portico of Solomon. (John 10:22-23)

It is clear that Jesus faithfully went to all the feasts perscribed by his religion. And Jesus participated in the passover meal, even leading the rituals by singing the hymns and such.

***Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the passover?” He said, “Go into the city to a certain one, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at your house with my disciples.’” And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the passover. When it was evening, he sat at table with the twelve disciples; and as they were eating, he said… *(Matthew 26:17-21)

And Jesus regularly went to the synagogue on the sabbath. Apparently he was a lector. 😉

He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: (Luke 4:16-17)

I havn’t watched the video quite frankly because I have no need. Any claim that Jesus was not religious is not born out by the words of scripture. Scripture clearly states that Jesus was faithful to his Jewish religion.

Jesus was very religious. It’s right there in black and white on the pages of all four Gospels.

I just watched part of the video…

I don’t have to hide my failure,
I don’t have to hide my sin,
It doesn’t depend on me,
It depends on Him.
See because when I was God’s enemy,
and certainly not a fan,
He looked down and said,
“I want that man.”

Its very cute, edgy, well acted and the production is polished. I’m glad the guy was cured of his porn addiction but rather think it was in spite of his rejection of religion rather than because of it. My cleansing from porn addiction was through confession to a priest. Go figure. 🤷

To me, Jesus without religion is like coffee without the cup. It’s not really possible. You have to get your religion from somewhere and most of the “Jesus, not religion” Churches buy their worship content from large production houses and are members of non-denominational associations coming dangerously close to being member churches in institutionalized religions themselves.

Amazing how manyy different ideas, concepts, words, and feelings there are And all different, depending on who is writing. Which is why Catholics tend to stay close to our Catechism:coffeeread:

The video is just unreasoned silliness. The guy says he hates religion, then goes on to make a video explaining his personal religion and his personal theology. Hates religion, does he? Then why is he preaching his religion? The fact that this has gone viral makes me wonder if people have lost their senses and their ability to reason.

This is DIRECTLY related to this thread.
Question: Do you have a personal relationship with your wife (or husband, its hard to tell sex over the internet.)?
Yes and female. I’m interested to see where you are going with this. Just so you know, I’m not interested in a debate based on this as what I originally stated was “perception”. One person’s reality is different than another’s and I respect that.

Well, Jesus and His parents did abide by all the requirements of the Jewish religion -presentation at the temple. He said He was here to complete the law, not overturn it.

Matthew 5,
17 'Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete them.
18 In truth I tell you, till heaven and earth disappear, not one dot, not one little stroke, is to disappear from the Law until all its purpose is achieved.

Who keeps the law and knows it’s every dot and stroke? As pointed out earlier, Christ instituted a Church with Peter as it’s foundation. It is that Church’s authority which is the basis for the Bible. Without that authority, the Bible is simply a collection of books.

Matthew 23,
1 Then addressing the crowds and his disciples Jesus said,
2 'The scribes and the Pharisees occupy the chair of Moses.
3 You must therefore do and observe what they tell you; but do not be guided by what they do, since they do not practise what they preach.

Christ cited the authority granted to the Jewish Church. He acknowledged the people were to follow the valid teachings even if the teachers themselves were flawed. The Chair of Peter has superseded the Chair of Moses. Heed the teachings of his Church even if you know the men in it’s offices are less than perfect.

Christ was not anti-religion.

He says he hates religion, then goes on to make a rather expensively produced video preaching religion–his own personal religion, his own personal theology.

He seems to think that his personal religion is based on the bible, which of course would not exist without religion. It’s a book produced by the Catholic Church.

He needs some reasoning skills and some historical knowledge. Oh, yeah, reading “Theology for Beginners” by Frank Sheed, might help too.

Exactly. I was trying so hard to be charitable (in my thoughts, I don’t get into verbal debates on Facebook) about the people who reposted this. I really want to question their intelligence and comprehension abilities, but then I just have to step back and remind myself that it’s probably just ignorance. 😦
