Jehovah witness (former Catholic) wants me to explain how Jesus can be God if he sits at Gods right hand.

Ask the JW how Jehovah can be pierced.

[BIBLEDRB]Rev 1:7-8[/BIBLEDRB]

The Son sits at the right hand of the Father. There are many meanings to this.

Instead ask him, ‘if you sit at your father’s right side, are you still a man?’

It’s just as logical as their question. 🙂

The TRINITY is a difficult subject to explain and a difficult “entity” to understand, even the most educated of theologians (Father Corapi) openly admits that full understanding is impossible in our human condition, and it will not be until we leave our bodies and enter into our Judgement and salvation that the TRINITY will understood.
And the jw will surely point out that the word “TRINITY” is not found in the Bible, which is true, but in place of the word you find the actual TRINITY appearing at JESUS baptism with the JESUS, the HOLY SPIRIT in the form of a dove, and GOD the FATHER speaking from heaven, “This is MY beloved SON in WHOM I am well pleased”.
So, in effect the jw is asking you to show him something that you cannot do, or explain something that does not have an earthly example - the closest would be water in three forms of ice, vapor and liquid, but it is still water.
However, the jw cannot “show” you gravity, because it is an invisible force. He can show you the effects of gravity, as you can show him the effects of the TRINITY as indicated above.
At the end of the day, howver, it will actually be The HOLY SPIRIT that moves the jw into the understanding (faith) of the TRINITY, so pray for that intercession

I don’t know what he is objecting to. Perhaps he is asking how God can be next to Himself. In this case, perhaps he does not know the doctrine of the Trinity. In John’s Prologue we are told that the Father and the Word (who took flesh as Jesus Christ) are both God. (I have heard though, if this is true, that the JW Bibles have altered the words at this point of the Prologue in some strange way.)

Or perhaps he is asking how God can be said to be in one place instead of everywhere. If this is his objection, there are two posssible reasons for this.
  1. This is a metaphoric way of speaking of the place of honor. It isn’t a physical location. It would simply mean he is honored more than men or angels in heaven with the Father.
  2. But if it is speaking of a physical location, it speaks of Christ’s humanity. Sometimes the Bible speaks of Christ’s humanity (as when he tells the Samaritan woman that he is thirsty) and sometimes it speaks of his divinity (as when we are told that he will ascend to heaven where he was before).
I don’t know which possibility holds in this case (or if both are true). I won’t trouble to analyze the passage, since these possibilities serve as good answers to this objection.

I think the points mdgspencer has given you are precisely what you need to present to this person. Also, if you will be engaging the former Catholic in an ongoing discussion, this website should be of help:

Jesus is fully God and fully Man, so as man it is no problem for him to stand to the right hand (figurativity and literally) of the Father. In Romans 8 both the Son, and HS prays to the Father.

You may want to bring up from Jewish Evangelism, the Two Jehovahs in the OT prophets for example, and ask them to explain those texts.

It’s important to note that the JW’s have an incorrect understanding of what the teaching of the Trinity actually is. What they perceive the Trinity is is actually Modalism. So trying to discuss the divinity of Christ with them is difficult when they first must know what the Catholic Church actually teaches.

I find that using their version of the bible will put them somewhat at ease. Proving the Trinity can easily be shown even with their own bible, despite the fact that it has been so mistranslated. I find that staying away from John 1 and instead focusing on John 20:28 can provide some headway. Also, John 8:58 and what the Greek actually says can show them what kind of claim Jesus is making for himself. In regards to the Holy Spirit, John 14 and John 16 is proof positive that the Holy Spirit is a “He”, and therefore must be a person.

Don’t let them answer your questions with questions and try to re-direct the conversation. Make them answer you. Again, using their bible (if you have acees to one) can make a big difference.

That’s a metaphor, not a literal description. As God does not have a physical body, there’s no literal “right hand” (nor lap, nor sitting) involved.

No, this person was not a former Catholic, maybe a former Catholyc… But anyhow, if they were a former Catholic they would know about the Trinity and be able to explain to you what you believe.

But some good verses for proof of Christ’s divinity…

Philippians 2:5-7
“For let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man.”

In other words, Christ was in the form of God and did not consider himself stealing anything from God by being equal with God.

A couple tips though, JWs have an answer to everything… Not good answers, but an answer. Pray for these people you are conversing with, be kind to them and genuine, explain everything you can, but understand they have been trained to not accept any opinion except for their church’s. (i.e. brainwashed)
