Come check out the Eastern Christian Forum at CAF and see what you will about the strange ebdfellows and common causes made there. Very interesting.
Yes, the Eastern Catholics keep bedswapping - between Rome and Orthodoxy. But on the whole they appear more comfortable under an Orthodox blanket. šŸ™‚

Yes, this is bound to cause any approach to reunion to be still born:

"We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty"

Does Pope Benedict XVI still teach this?
It’s just a statement that the pope is the vicar of Christ. Here’s the phrase in context:

But since We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty, Who will have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the Truth, and now that Our advanced age and the bitterness of anxious cares urge Us on towards the end common to every mortal, We feel drawn to follow the example of Our Redeemer and Master, Jesus Christ, Who, when about to return to Heaven, implored of God, His Father, in earnest Prayer, that His Disciples and followers should be of one mind and of one heart: I pray . . . that they all may be one, as Thou Father in Me, and I in Thee: that they also may be one in Us.

Now does that sound like somebody who thinks they are the equal of God?

Not at all. Context is good.

Funny. Doesnt matter so long as they aren’t in the wrong bed.

They are still in a church right?

I just noted above that one of the quotes came from Pope Leo XIII’s Praeclara Gratulationis Publicae, which called for the reunion of the East and the West. Isn’t it ironic?
See, I am not the only one who makes the correlation between anti catholic eos and anti catholic protestants. The same incredulity is present in both bitter attitudes.

Believe it or not. There are people out there who think this of us.
I had to explain to a co-worker that Catholics do not worship statues. He had went to a Catholic Church saw the statues, saw everyone kneeling and filled in the blanks.

He was with other Catholics who couldn’t explain why they were doing what they were doing. And then he met me:D
The other week someone I know turned all red, went ballistic, and started bellowing at me and anyone else within 200 yards of us that Catholics worship statues. I started my usual explanation of how the Church taught the Gospel before the invention of the Guttenburg press in an era when over 90% of the Church could not read. But the person just kept on repeating over and over that we worship statues. No line of reasoning, no evidence, just heated tautology. So now I say simply, ā€œI am not having this conversation with you.ā€

Seems the basic lesson of this thread is, that if something sounds to outrageous to be true, it most likely is. ā€œToo outrageous to be trueā€, I mean. Not ā€œtrueā€.

Never mind.

Does that ā€œWeā€ mean ā€œWe, the popeā€ (majestic plural) or ā€œWe, the Church and body of Christā€?

My apologies for questioning this. Since Peter lives on in every Pope and the teaching never changes, it is obvious that Pope Benedict must teach this today just as his predecessor Pope Leo XIII did in 1894.
FATHER BLESS ,so it is true its one or 2 or 3of the popes teachings …i swear forgive me for swearing that someone here said it was Protestant propaganda used against the catholic church …we orthodox truly are blessed to have you here also the other Father the younger Ambrose …you taught us a lot thank you so much, they cant pull the wool over your eyes…stashko:p

Yes, it is propaganda against the CC, used by some Protestants.

If the Orthodox case against the CC depends on misinterpreting what Catholic documents say, & taking them in the worst sense possible, then that puts the Orthodox case in a very bad light indeed. I forgot - only Orthodox & Protestant scribblers know what we Catholics really mean by our own documents

Isn’t that essentially what ā€œVicar of Christā€ means?

Does the Patriarch of Constantinople still teach that he is:* His Most Divine All-Holy Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and Ecumenical Patriarch?

Why is this so scandalous to people? Scripture teaches us that we become partakers of the divine nature…

It is not through his own efforts that the patriarch has come to this position.

Willing to agree if your willing to agree the Pontiff also comes by his position NOT of his own accord.

Here’s the full text of Unam Sanctam, which was written by Pope Boniface to assert his rights against King Philip the Fair of France.
That quote above does not appear in it.

I don’t see anything wrong with this.
Extra Ecclesiam nulla Salus.

Here’s an article that refutes these, and other Catholic ā€˜Inventions’…

Thanks for answering these Patrick! šŸ‘ Someone sent these quotes from Popes and Church Hierarchy:
ā€œThe Pope takes the place of Jesus Christ on earth. By divine right, the Pope has supreme and full power in faith and morals over each and every pastor and his flock. He is the true Vicar of Christ, the Head of the entire Church, the father and teacher of all Christians. He is the infallible ruler, the founder of dogmas, the author of and the judge of councils, the universal ruler of truth, the arbiter of the world, the supreme judge of heaven and earth, the judge of all, being judged by no one, God Himself on earth.ā€ -New York Catechism (early 20th century)
ā€œThe Pope and God are the same.ā€ Pope Pius V (1566-1572)
ā€œThe Pope is of so great dignity, and so exalted that he is not a mere man, but as it were, God. and the vicar of God.ā€ -Ferraris Ecclesiastical dictionary, 18th century.
ā€œAll names which in the Scriptures are applied to Christ, by virtue of which it is established that He is over the church, all the same names are applied to the Pope.ā€ - On the Authority of the Councils, book 2, Chapter 17.
ā€œThe pope is the supreme judge of the law of the land . . . He is the vicegerent of Christ, and is not only a priest forever, but also King of kings and Lord of lordsā€ā€“La Civilta Cattolica, March 18, 1871.
How should this be answered?

Haven’t read all the posts…

Geez, do people really fall for this stuff? We can’t be sheep that easily led astray & duped, can we?

Guess that’s why we need a head shepherd.

The pope is not God… never has been, never will be, but he was given his position of authority by God.

Amen.

Here is the Number One threat facing Catholicism – not secularism or Islam or even fundamentalism, but poor catechesis. How can the laity defend our faith if we don’t understand it?
