Anti-catholic, anti-muslim comparisons

This article tells the story of an anti-Catholic newspaper in the first half of the 20th century in Missouri. It draws comparisons between anti-Catholic sentiments of yesteryear with anti-Muslim sentiments of today.

Certainly there are parallels between the two. However, the elephant in the parlor is that in early 20th century America, “radicalized Catholic fundamentalists” (provided such a thing existed at all) weren’t massacring people.
 
Nor were there cable news, the Internet, and remote control fighter planes.

Tiny distinctions like that aren’t important. What’s important is that all groups have radicals; how these radicals behave really isn’t important.

… Seriously, the blinders some people must wear; it’s a surprise they can see anything.

Yes.

But it is a mistake to treat all instances of discrimination as having the same root causes.

On the other hand…now that I think of it…my great-grandfather may have had a role in what would today be considered a terrorist bombing. Whatever his role may have been, he didn’t light the fuse, and the target was the KKK, and to my knowledge no one was hurt. But the ends justified the means, because afterward the Klan stopped harassing the Catholics who were building the first Catholic church in that area.

Oh-oh. Does this mean I’ll have to deport myself?
