Anti-Catholic Art....a new trend?

"Meanwhile, the exhibit will also feature artwork of President Barack Obama, who is depicted nailed to a cross. The gallery description of this piece says that he is “a victim, crucified in the wake of special and distorted interests.”

The message of the artwork seems unmistakable: “Obama is, like Christ, an innocent victim. The Pope, meanwhile, is the worthy recipient of the hatred and vitriol aimed at the Church.”

That type of so-called “art” is the equivalent of a brat sticking out its tongue saying “Look at me…Look, pay attention to me!”
Unfortunately, there are some naive pseudo-sophisticates that take this garbage seriously.
It just like much of the shock value “art” of the '60’s and '70’s that is now forgotten,
The only reason exhibitors show this stuff is to get publicity. All it shows is how low public standards have sunk. It is a crying shame that many of these exhibitions are funded with tax money.
 
How is this not a hate crime? Drawing a picture of the pope with bullet holes in him? Very distasteful…

And Obama is not by any means innocent. I don’t think he’s the devil like some people do, but he is far from great.
 
Seriously? Forget the insult to the pope; what an insult to art and aesthetics! Have you ever heard of such an un-nuanced, infantile, simplistic, partisan piece of **** in your life? I know 4 year olds who display a more complex, sensitive understanding of politics and violence than this ridiculous piece of “art.”
 
Just keep saying to yourself, “… and all the powers of hell will not prevail against it”

That has always helped me smile in the face of anti-catholicism run amok. 😃

Absolutely! You hit the nail squarely on its head. Liberal forces in government giving artisitic brats tax-funded resources to showcase their metaphorical “tongue sticking out” gesture just to get attention!
 
Anti-Catholic, and by broader extension, Anti-Christian Art has been around for some time now. This isn’t a new trend, but it does seem to be increasing.

My suggestion, as a Catholic Artist (musician primarily), is to create art that glorifies God in response. We need more Catholic artists out there. 🙂

Slightly O.T., but ‘hate’ crimes as a genre are dreadfully dangerous. We must protect freedom of speech even when we find it distasteful.

The answer isn’t to ‘ban’ such work, but to create better works in response to it.

The reason such ‘art’ is even shown is that our general culture has sunk to such low depths.

So the question becomes how do we change the culture? My initial though is by us, individually, vibrantly living out our Catholic and Christian Faith in our daily lives.
 
This is nothing new. I work for a comic book store on occasion, and you get things like ‘Preacher’ and ‘Battle Pope’ which are simply ridiculous. There is a lot of anti-Christian messages in many comic books, many of which really push teh envelope of decency and many of these are celebrated.

But let me not paint a bad picture of comic books. There are plenty of great and entirely appropriate ones as well. It is a true artform. However I see absolutely none that promote Christian values explicitly, and the ones that do are poorly done and only fit for children.

The same goes for video games. I feel that more young Catholics should start entering into cultures that Catholics parents have been, unjustly in some ways, negative about and thus young people are consuming media that is purely secular art.

I fully believe it is possible to make engaging comic books, video games etc. that can deal with Christian themes while still being entertaining. A game that features violence as a mechanic doesn’t necessarily mean it encourages violence. One could easily make a game that deals with the Crusades, which can involve defending a city against enemy soldiers but still reinforce messages about the destructive nature of war, and our Fallen world and man’s need for God. As well it can actually be educational about the Crusades and the Inquisition and what those were all really about rather than the pop culture caricatures of these times.

Anyway I guess I went off on a tangent. But yes, anti-Christian art is nothing new, and not simply relegated to paintings. And it’s time we got more involved in many artforms as a way to spread the Gospel message in creative ways.

A good way to start would be embracing pop culture art from comics, manga, and even graffitti styles and incourage a new Christian artistic renaissance. It’s something that I plan on doing. I hope more follow.

No, because that is highly unlikely. Obama gets slurped by the left, stupid people, and kids. The odds that some artist was painting him as one of the thieves is unlikely, since A) the artist likely loves the smell of Obama’s perspiration and B) the artist probably doesn’t know there were two theives buried with Jesus.

Well said. The proper response to all of this is to become better Catholic Christians. I am with you on both freedom of speech and the silly notion of hate crimes. Freedom of speech must remain a basic human right. However, freedom demands responsible usage.

The media and fawning liberals see Obama as a messianic figure. Sadly, a large portion of the American populace seems quite susceptible to propaganda and mind control. Let us remember in Jesus’ time there were many false messiahs. Some people discerned the true Messiah sooner than others.

I am not offended by persecution, my faith and hope are strengthened by it. Charity flows from these virtues, and I am grateful to my enemies:

Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake

What sort of art gallery is that? Who owns it and who is the artist? Sounds very subversive and Canadian.😉

I’m not sure how how subversive, but it seems rather Canadian. The gallery (which is only a year old) was founded by a married couple, and since the wife was an artist originally from Eastern Europe, that is the focus of the gallery:
