I’m not sure if I’m putting this in the right place but I just have to share this story. I’m just in shock!
My husband is a truck driver. He is a good driver, no accidents, no tickets and always follows the rules. He is very meticulous. Always drives legal.
Today he did his pre-trip inspection and started off. Drivers have to allow 15 min. for this inspection but when you are experienced, you can do it more quickly and my husband did it and set off. He got pulled into a weigh station shortly after that even though he was empty and has a pre-pass which usually lets him bypass many weigh stations.
The DOT (Dept. of Transportation) officer, pulled him aside (along with several others) and went over everything with a fine tooth comb. He even searched my husband’s truck which was without cause but not a problem since my husband doesn’t have anything he shouldn’t.
He was apparently okay at first but when he saw velcro on my husband’s dashboard, he thought it was for a radar detector. When my husband showed him that it is so he can attach his statue of Mary to his dash things took an ugly turn!
The officer went through the whole truck, throwing his Catholic books around, throwing the case with his hearing aids in it outside on the wet ground, threw his clothes out on wet ground, questioning his prescription medications and saying he thinks they are “pick me up pills” when they are for indigestion (protonix) and arthritis (voltaren). Does your doctor actually prescribe you all “pick me up pills”??? lmbo! Luckily he had the prescription bottles for both meds.
He shut my husband down for ten hours even though he just came off ten hour break for being on road ten minutes early and ticketed him for not having hearing aids in even though DH tried to explain that the truck is so loud it distorts the hearing aids and makes him unable to hear anything. $406 plus the lost miles we needed desperately.
Then, when he was leaving, the officer told him to “pray to his statue and maybe he will get the money for his tickets!”
Now how do you like that?
We are not letting it bother us though. While it was upsetting at first, we are just trusting God and looking at this as an opportunity to see His glory. We are even stronger in our faith now! We are, however, going to report this officer. Wish us luck.
