Call Catholic Answers tomorrow AM and have them overnight some leaflets so you can cover the cars in the parking lot during the talk. That way when they go to get in their cars they have the Truth rihjt there on the windsheild! Good Luck–Rebecca

Ask about their Tract Paks or ask for suggestions!

This will be my first attempt to engage a professional Anti-Catholic in apologetics. Up till now, all of my experience has been with friends and family. I will probably get beat up due to his experience and schooling. But I feel I must defend Christ and His Church to the best of my ability.
You are not engaging Mike Gendron in battle, you are about to engage in spiritual warfare with demons that use such men as their tools. You are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual hosts of wickedness. You will get beat up if you don’t understand what you are really fighting! … be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace; besides all these, taking the shield of faith, with which you can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Pray at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that utterance may be given me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
Eph. 6:10-20As a Catholic you have the authority to act in the name of Christ. Call upon the graces that you received in Confirmation to defend the true faith. Exercise your priestly power and bind the demonic spirits that you are going to encounter in your spiritual warfare. If possible, have people praying for you as you engage in this battle. Keep in mind always that you are not warring against Mike Gendron, you are warring against the demonic strongholds that keeps him captivity to the powers of darkness.… the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds …
2Cor 10:4

And along those lines, remember that Mike Gendron is your brother in Christ, someone whom you must desire to bring to the fullness of the truth of Christ. If you treat him as the problem, even as the devil seeks to anger you through Mike’s words, you will be less able to speak the truth of Christ.

If you weren’t already planning to do so, you may want to attend daily Mass on the morning of the talk and definitely have others be your prayer partners during the event.

Keep us informed. I know I’m interested to learn how it goes.

God Bless you in this endeavor,

CARose

This is the best course of action. I imagine the Q&A section would limit you so as to not allow you to give a full defense of the faith.

In addition, you may want to hand out a flyer before and after where people can write their questions and return to you. If they give you their e-mail or snail mail address, you can respond with a full explanation for each question.

I like your idea Maranatha. The only concern is that you need to be prepared to receive contacts from those who are merely desiring to tear you from the Church, so you need to be willing to spend time in Charity with them. They may come to you with the expectation of opening your eyes to the evils of the Church, but if you pray fervently, you may find that the Holy Spirit can use you to move their hearts.

God Bless,

There will be an Anti-Catholic evangelist coming to a community near my town in 3 days. He will be giving a talk titled “A Biblical View of Roman Catholicism”. In reading from his website, pro-gospel.org/about.php
his entire ministry is built around leading Catholics out of the Church and educating others on how to do the same. His name is Mike Gendron from “Proclaiming the Gospel Ministry” of Plano, Texas. He has written two books; “Preparing Catholics for Eternity” and “Roman Catholicism: Scripture vs. Tradition”

He graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1991.

Any help, prayers, or advice would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first attempt to engage a professional Anti-Catholic in apologetics. Up till now, all of my experience has been with friends and family. I will probably get beat up due to his experience and schooling. But I feel I must defend Christ and His Church to the best of my ability.
One way to deal with this would be to make up a simple flier with a brief statement about Scripture and the relationship to Apostolic Tradition. You might include on the back the most popular Anti-Catholic points and simple one or two line answers to them. At the bottom include websites like Catholic Answers or CCF, CUF, Other resources like EWTN and where to find it on the local cable. Some good book suggestions like Catholic and Christian, Why do Catholics do That?, Biblical Roots of Catholicism.

Maybe you could order 200 copies of Pillar of Fire - Pillar of Faith and hand them out with the flier. You won’t be given the opportunity to speak and what you do say will be twisted to make you look like a fool. I would go the printed route. Just carry them in a heavy duty shoulder bag (someone may try and take the bag away from you) and hand them out. Or you could put them on the parked cars without anyone noticing.

Or you could get the local Catholic Church to host “The Catholic Church and the Bible” the following week!

Rich is right. There is little point to debate as you are just going to encounter sophistry. Read: Interacting With Sophists: Reflections on “Debates” With Anti-Catholic Polemicists

First, thank you to everyone who prayed for me and gave advice. In my job as a firefighter, sometimes duty gets in the way of my personal life. I was called in to work on Tuesday for a 24 hour shift and was unable to attend the talk.

My e-mails to my friends and fellow Catholics did not go unanswered however. One friend had her Holy hour during the talk and offered up her Adoration for the talk. Several people did attend the talk, including the Deaconate candidate and possibly the Deacon from my Parish.

I’ll give another update as soon as I hear something from one of the people who attended.

Again, thanks for all the prayers and advice.

:rotfl: Chalk one up for the Holy Spirit!

Let us know the follow-up.

Pyro,

I am sorry that after your preparation that you were not meant to attend the talk. Hopefully those who did attend were able to spread at least some light into the darkness.

I’d be most interested to hear how things went. Please keep us informed.

Our parish did a series similar to the “Catholics and the Bible” as suggested by Bro. Rich. It went well enough that it brought me back to the Church and a non-Catholic attendee converted and is now discerning the priesthood.
