Out of all of the evildoers in the world whom you could denounce, you pick this guy? You don’t even know his name, just whose boyfriend he is. Out of all the threats to the Church, he ranks very, very low.
Just because I didn’t initially use his name doesn’t mean I don’t know it.

Then why was it removed after only one hour on Facebook?
Because people overreact.

Clearly I disagree with everything he says, but it sounds like he’s just attempting fraternal correction. I hope the reaction doesn’t discourage him from dialogue, the path he was on might have lead him to an honest and accurate understanding of what we believe.

I do not see Catholics going in large numbers to predominately Protestant Countries to try and convert or save the people there. Do you know anything about their fundamentalist bran of Christianity? It has some serious issues and any promotion of it ought to be concerning especially with the over the top authority teaching, women staying at home to obey their husbands. Actually, I feel rather sorry for the Duggar children. None of them are going to college, they are marrying after just meeting their spouses. Ben has just moved in on the family compound in the guest house. He had to give up his business to do so (selling cars). Their every move is chaperone and watched. They can only hold hands now that they are engaged. It is a tightly controlled existence. And even this stupid rant was removed probably more to do with image for the family than the truth.
The Duggars are a wealthy family because of this reality show. I, too, have a problem in that college doesn’t seem to be a concern but I wouldn’t be concerned if my parents were millionaires either. They probably get 1 million an episode.

For the average fudamentalist family, no college education has got to be a major problem unless they marry people with education.

i actually don’t disagree with you. I think coming from his type of background though, dialogue is rather difficult and it becomes more of a monologue. Any time one of the older Duggar children are on the internet, they have to have another sibling watch them. Facebook though is not the best if someone is truly interested in dialogue over doctrine, there fore it becomes more of a rant. This also shows the lack of freedom in that household for other thoughts and ideas than their own.

Their guru Bill Gothard teaches that college for anything is a corrupt system which is curious because he did attend himself. This is extended to even Christian colleges and universities. It is not a matter of the fact that Jim is wealthy (partly due to the show), it is that none of them are suppose to move on in education. Women are expected basically to marry and start having babies right away which is what we are seeing now. The oldest girl dabbled at trying to attend community college but it fell through and is just bouncing around doing camps. I actually feel rather sorry for all of them.

I don’t understand why everyone loves the Duggars so much. They don’t like Catholics. Sure they tolerate us, but think we are damned… yep.

Sorry I watch the show, but I also see they are not as ‘perfect’ as everyone wants to claim they are.
Maybe because the Duggars obviously don’t use artificial birth control either??

What I fail to understand is why so many Catholics are crazy about the Duck Dynasty people, who don’t think that Catholics are Christian at all. I know that because I was raised in the same sect they still belong to. The church of Christ Campbellites are convinced they are the only Christians to exist anywhere. I think the answer may lie in extremely Conservative politics.

I don’t know anybody who “loves” the Duggars, or thinks they are “perfect”.
*Far *from. Quite the opposite.

Most people you know love them?

.
Yes I do. Go on their facebook page or 19 Kids and Counting facebook page. There are actual people who defend everything they say and do and say they love them.

They have a lot of ‘fans’

The Duggars are not wealthy because of the show. Jim Bob has a real estate license and he buys and flips houses and other property. They are quite frugal in their daily expenses and have managed to live debt free for many years. I think a few of the kids are taking online classes at the local university; they are free to do so.

Do me a favor. Go on Youtube and type in 14 Kids and Pregnant again. Then watch a recent episode. Trust me… they get A LOT of money from the show. In 10 years they now can go around the world and have iphones etc. I do not believe they are as frugal as they make it seem. It is an image. The show is scripted. Sorry it is. They used to make their own clothes and as the specials and show went on they wear more name brand clothes

Well, let’s remember that Ben is young, a bit naive about the world, and his thoughts about Catholics has been ingrained in him since childhood, no doubt. This is no different than most other evangelical sect.

There will come a time, ( and it may be soon) when all Christians will have to stand together, rather than separate. Perhaps it is what has to happen to bring unity to Christianity. Does anyone think Jesus wants His Church to be separated?! I’m so tired of the divisions.

i think their current home was built with funds from doing these shows. Yes, Jim Bob has been a successful real estate agent. They also make money from their books as well. Yes, they do live debt free and frugally but I think the reason in going “reality” TV was to support themselves, give themselves exposure and promote their version of Christianity. I also think a number of things are given to them by the fact that they are now Christian celebrities.

Or go to online Christianity Today which seems to focus their social news on this family as if they don’t have enough attention and focus. I agree with your point. That is why I started this thread. I would wager that these people are not so pro-Catholic as they want to portray. I think Ben was probably told to take the Facebook page off for their image reasons. I think it is concerning that they don’t believe in having TVs but are willing to but themselves on as a reality show and become Christian superstars in the process. I find it disturbing that the most recently married Jill who just recently met her husband before getting married, is now on People Magazine with their pregnancy after a month of marriage as well as telling the world what a great kisser he is and how glad that she has a “Godly Marriage”. Lets see how she feels about it 10 years from now with 10 kids later. Now the latest addition, Ben wants to pop off about Catholic teaching as if he knows it all. It is all rather disturbing.

Is this teaching only in this particular group or is this an evangelical teaching?

I just wonder how they survive financially if no one achieves education pass high school because it is seen as a corrupting force.

It would work for the females possibly but not for males.

This particular family doesn’t but many evangelical do. They use birth control and have surgery and are taught that it is ok by their churches. On one hand, they say it is more about trusting in God, but.

yes, he is young and sheltered. If he really wanted to address differences on the Virgin Mary, he can always go to Catholic forums like this but I wouldn’t wager on it anytime soon.

it is too easy to throw up one’s hands in the air and say we just need to stand together and get along. Part of getting along is address differences in doctrine and dogma. But that isn’t done by rants on Facebook. That isn’t coming from someone that is interested in dialogue and understanding. That is coming from someone that think he is a cut above yet in reality acting like any other 20 something on Facebook.

Bill Gothard has been around since the 1960s. He had a huge impact in the heyday of his seminars in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. I went to them in the late 1970’s. The sex scandal with his brother did cause a drop but he kinda morphed himself into the homeschooling ATI program in 1984. His teaching is very controversial and has a heavy emphasis on authority. It is a cradle to grave family system. Hobby Lobby founder, Kimray founder are also involved with it. The Duggars likewise. Bill Gothard finally was fired earlier this year for sexual harassment of teenage girls sent to work with him under the ATI program.

I just have a problem with the lack of education. We know that the Amish do this. They only go to eight grade and are fine because they exert great control over their group. It’s hell and damnation and they feel they are the chosen people.

At least that is my take on it.

I would imagine that they are raised with what we know as a strong “protestant work ethic”.Many might join the military and then get civil service type jobs. I just can’t figure out how they survive financially.

Because there is nothing concerning ABC in the Bible, after all.

Yes, I agree 100%. Education has been the hallmark of Catholicism. It is one thing that I appreciate about it. The number of saints that have started schools etc is huge and almost never ending. No time at any time is anyone discouraged about becoming educated, well informed etc. Anti-education seen in some Protestant groups like the Amish and other Anabaptist groups are an anomaly in Christianity as a whole. I think Bill Gothard borrowed ideas from the Amish, along with his big emphasis that woman do not work outside the home if married. I have nothing against parents that decide to homeschool their children. The ATI program though is very shaky. It does not result in a high school diploma, in fact those that were raised in it, have had to go on and get GED’s if they decided to continue in secondary education. The ATI program is based on Matthew 5-7 and emphasizes wisdom with various (normal) subjects thrown in. When children were done with it which is usually in their teens, they were suppose to get apprenterships which usually meant they went on to work for Bill Gothard at his various ministry centers. It is kinda a scam in my opinion. This is why you see the older Duggar children basically floundering around. The oldest son who is married is working for Family Research Center on the coats of Jim Bob’s political connections. The other two girls are married or getting there. The oldest girls dabbled in on line and community college and is doing camp counseling. The other boy is selling used cars. It isn’t a very prosperous future with the added pressure of having lots of children to boot.
