Anti Catholic message in church

I like to church hop, with this current one, I became quite disturbed, for the pastor was referencing one of their members as a “recovering Catholic”, he mentioned this twice and proceeded to stand in the back of the church so people could watch the video being shown to them. I abruptly left, crucifix and bible in hand, and mentioned to him that I’m a visiting Catholic and didn’t appreciate the comments he made.

He followed me out of the church and apologized, I was so upset, I was shaking, and of course, I accepted his apology, after we chatted a little bit, I calmed down and hung out for the rest of the service.

The lesson learned here, there is “nothing” to recover from, from the Catholic church. The misconception many protestants, and even too many Catholics get into, is thinking that in order to be Catholic, you must maintain a sense of self loathing and guilt, this absolutely is not supposed to be the case at all, in fact, just the opposite if you are getting the messages being taught to you correctly. The reality of it all, that person was recovering from their misconception, not the true church and what it stands for.
prodigalson12,
Curiosity about your title brought me to your thread, but after that and your following comments I am confused about your topic and what you are seeking dialogue upon? I will give you an ‘Amen’ on your last paragraph.
Never draw me into a debate, question match, or any other thing that could potentially create controversy between Catholics and Protestants. That was a baited question and you know it.
prodigalson12,
I admire your stance on ecumenism. However, with a comment like this one, as a Catholic, curious about your OP, what are we allowed to ask of you or comment upon?
Camron, it’s the nature of online forums, I have already seen where the thread would be taken “including it being off topic”, and it would only result in a negative impact, so I’m wise enough to know, it’s a loaded question.
prodigalson12,
I agree with you about the nature of online forums. Is ‘why open the door’ a fair question that won’t offend you? Again please, what is your topic?
On the topic, I am sorry you had this experience. Billions have been saved by hearing the message of Christ, and receiving His sacraments, in the CC.
Jon
JonNC,
Your perception and experience is greater than mine to understand the topic. Sorry about you and your son’s experience. I heard many things growing up that I wished I would have had clarified at the time. Unfortunately, I still probably would not have understood the explanation either. It took some 30 odd years. Thanks for the charity in your words about the sacraments and the salvation of souls. Have a blessed Holy Week.
I’ll create another thread for it, it’s off topic.
prodigalson12,
This helps narrow it down a bit in this thread with you starting a church hopping thread.

Peace, Graubo

I’ll create another thread for it, it’s off topic.
Actually, It’s on topic.
**Why are you Church-hopping in the first place? **
Why would you be shocked to hear anti-Catholic sentiment in a church run by an ex-Catholic?

Oh, I see. Maybe so, I do recall that a couple of the nuns were, I believe, phillipino (sp?), and he and some of the other kids at times had difficulty understanding them. 😛 I just told him to try harder. 😉
Jon
That would be the gender specific filipina. There is an old George Carlin comedy routine where he ask why are people from the Philippines called filipino.

Pilipino or Filipino, the national language is made up mostly of the Tagalog language, the ethnic group of the Manila area with lots added from the dialects of the other ethnic groups, Spanish and English.

What you are doing is a SIN. Catholics should not visit places of false worship–and must certainly never participate–unless for a serious reason, like a wedding or funeral.
That’s not true. Catholics are allowed to attend other churches (provided they are fulfilling their own Sunday obligation to attend Mass, and don’t partake in any analogue to communion).

Provided also that they are firm in their faith.

I also think you can get permission (mixed marriages often fit this description)

Prodigalson, you don’t say anything about attending Mass on these Sundays that you are “church hopping” yet, you call yourself Catholic.

I suggest you stop the church hopping and get to a Confessional, as quickly as possible. :highprayer:

:blessyou:

As stated early on, it’s 6pm, Sunday, there is no mass at 6pm Sunday in my area, that’s why I was there. I again am floored how people just add onto my words here, I never said anything about attending Mass because it’s not relevent, if I were to say, I go to Protestant services instead of mass, then, yes, we have an issue. Here is the big one that’s just going to bug you, I don’t go to either every single Sunday. Yes, I skip weekends, yes I’m going to burn in hell over it, lol (sarcasm)… you see what I mean here, the misconception is being pro paginated yet again. I do enjoy visiting my Grandmother and reading the bible to her, having discussions about it, the Church, and in a way, fellowship with just her and I (two catholics). I also don’t consider what we believe and live, as being only a sunday obligation, it’s an every day obligation to live in Christ and do the works we by default yearn to do naturally as the fruit of our faith.

In my perfect world, there would be Mass and a protestant service going 24/7, somewhere in my area, always a place to have direct fellowship with, sadly this never will be the case. Do you see more now what my perspective is?

Along the original topic, it’s about experiences in the church, it’s about the obligation and higher standard a church leader must adhere to and in this case, they are not supposed to be bashing some out side church, for they are the leaders and the people will adopt the message being taught as their own. It’s also about dispelling the myths, that we have to be self loathing and in a constant state of guilt, that is not what the church teaches us to do, yet too often, this is the case, so no wonder there is dissention.

Actually, It’s on topic.

I so love this place, more words I never said. The pastor was referring to someone who is an ex catholic, he himself never was catholic.

I don’t hear anti protestant messages during Mass, I expect the same from the protestants during their services, that’s all.

He might understand it better now, too. 🙂 Or more importantly, I might be better able to explain it now. 😛

The may have been charitable. I’ll let others judge that. The fact is they are true.
May you be blessed this week as well.

Look - I’m not attacking you.

I’m merely trying to figure out why a person, who professes to be Catholic would “church-hop” when they have the fullness of the Gospel in the Catholic Church.

Why?

Prodigal, I don’t quite understand your reasoning for not attending Mass. What do you mean about a 6:00 p.m. Mass not being available?🤷

Are you a teenager? You are very flippant about going to Hell and no MATURE Catholic would ever feel that way. And, since when is going to Mass not relevant.

You say you don’t want to get into a debate about Catholic/Protestant issues but wasn’t that really the purpose of this thread?🤷

Or was it that you are boasting, for whatever reason, about going to so many Protestant services?

Your words make it seem you are almost jumping with glee about attending all these services. And that is what is bewildering to those of us who are practicing Catholics.

I believe you are a teenager so I won’t respond to further posting because you are not serious, just having fun.:sad_yes:👋

:amen:

I don’t find the phrase “recovering …” offensive but descriptive of some people who have left a Church.

Nor do I see it as blaming either the Church someone left or the person themselves. Sometimes it’s just that the person needs a different environment in which to thrive spiritually. This may not mean leaving their Church but finding one within it that better meets their needs. (Think the above may also explain some of the “Church-hopping” that has been mentioned in this thread.)

Sometimes too the “recovering” is recovery from the effects of trying to believe what the person cannot after all discussion and prayer believe. A few years of this and some people need to recover and also from being told that if they “really understood they would believe” or “act as if you believe and you will come to believe.”

This is not confined to any one Church.

Also, think that those who take words literally have more of a problem with self loathing and guilt because they take Bible passages and what is said in sermons, prayers etc literally eg “and there is no good in us”.

Again, for the third time, there is no Mass to attend at 6pm on a Sunday here, none at all, the doors are closed, everybody has gone home, done notta, do I have to write this on your hand so you can remember it???

Mass is only an hour long, it’s done, over with, everybody goes home, I desire more, much more, so yes, I attend additional services elsewhere as well. I have this crazy part of myself that desires more then an hour out of my day per week to have fellowship, I have a thirst for this and it’s not being quenched by a measly little hour, got it?

Then I suggest you look into starting a prayer group or Bible Study.
You should never limit yourself to giving the Lord only 1 hour a week and nobody said you had to.

Attending 1000 Protestant services doesn’t fulfill your Sunday obligation to attend Mass.
In fact - it’s dangerous because you don’t sound all that well-catechized.

Church hopping, indeed.🤷

hi - some responses may sound harsh but i thing the last post is a valid point. a Catholic who has the energy like yourself can start or join a prayer group, sunday catechism to school children, visiting detention centers, the sick or homebound, etc. all of which offer a great fellowship. Catholics have many ways to enrich his relationship with the Lord, the most effective for me is spending time during adoration and the Holy Eucharist. i hope you have this in the Church in your area.
God bless.

Much of the questioning is entirely to attempt to find some crumb of evidence to use against me, and the obscured mannerisms within the wording make what I say mean something entirely different. With the earlier post, for some reason I’m still being told that I said to go to protestant service instead of mass, where is it that I have said this?

I agree, and have already started along being pro-active about the situation, my grandmother and I get together regularly, and has been a good starting point, so yes, have already begun there. Still bible study is and will continue to be done with catholics and non catholics alike, the last one was with another church and it was kind of funny since I rather invaded their space so to speak by just dropping in with the permission of their parish. They were not prepared to have a visitor, but we had a good time, and for some odd reason, being the only catholic there, I was the one expected to take the lead in the discussion, of which I did.

Hi Prodigalson,

I know that at my Church we do have Catholics that attend our Wednesday Bible Study and our Adult Sunday School lead by our priest since their Catholic Church does not offer these programs. They do attend the Catholic Church Mass like you do. I don’t think that what you do is very uncommon for Catholics seeking more. I have mentioned Adult Sunday School on this board many of times and you would think that I had 4 heads. From what I have personally witnessed, I think that more Catholic Churches would be wise to have more educational opportunities for their adults–not just RCIA if they want them to stay away from other Churches.

Have a blessed Holy Week!
